98% of Spanish students interviewed affirm that learning English is one of their main New Year’s resolutions

Coinciding with the beginning of the New Year, many people set new resolutions for the 365 days ahead. Quitting smoking, playing sports or starting a new diet are usually some of the most common objectives for a large part of Spanish society. However, there is another very popular purpose for these dates: learning English, as stated by 98% of Spanish students from Open English, a global platform for learning English.

That learning this language is considered one of the main goals is not by chance, since a greater mastery of this subject has a direct and positive effect on people’s social and work lives. In fact, according to a global Open English survey, 99% of students believe that learning English could help them achieve their professional goals and 93% say that their personal fulfillment, confidence and satisfaction can increase by learning this language. Even 98% of the students interviewed believe that knowing English can help change people’s lives3. In addition, according to the latest edition of the Job Supply and Demand report in Spain, carried out by Infoempleo and Adecco, English is the language most in demand in job offers in the national territory, being required in almost 70% of job offers.

However, English has always been considered one of the classic pending subjects for Spaniards. This is corroborated by the data from the platform in Spain, which indicates that 63% of the Spanish students interviewed claimed to have experienced an uncomfortable situation because they did not know the language, especially at work. In fact, the main reason why students want to have more knowledge and proficiency in English is to improve their professional career.

Currently, there are different ways to learn this language, although, due to the rise of technologies and the multiple advantages they offer, online platforms have positioned themselves as one of the favorite options for students. Specifically, one of the things that Spanish students value the most is the flexibility offered by digital platforms, since they allow them to study at all times no matter where they are.

In addition to the flexibility offered by online classes, the learning methodology, as well as the possibility of accessing native teachers in the sessions, are features highly valued by students. Andrés Moreno, CEO of Open English, explains: “Our methodology is based on three fundamental pillars: online and live classes, native teachers and innovative content. This model, 100% online, was designed so that students could combine learning language with their daily lives.

One million students around the world

Open English, a platform that belongs to the education company Open Education together with Next U and Open English Junior and Open English Enterprise, was created in 2007 by Andrés Moreno and his partner Wilmer Sarmiento. Currently, the company has 1,442 direct employees and 2,000 teachers around the world, all of whom are native speakers and have the TESOL English certificate. In addition, in the first semester of 2021 Open English registered more than 150,000 new enrollments, reaching one million students since its creation. In 2021, Open English launched its service in Spain and Portugal, exceeding 1,000 students in the first semester of that same year.

In this sense, Moreno highlights: “From the first semester of 2020 to the same period of 2021, we have obtained a year-on-year growth in new enrollments, globally, of 60%. We believe that these data reflect that learning English through of online platforms has positioned itself as one of the alternatives most in demand by students and we hope to continue with this upward trend this year”.
