Andalusian exports grow by 31% and reach a record of 18,243 million

Exports from Andalusia reached 18,243 million euros between January and May 2022, which is the highest figure recorded for the first five months of a year since there are comparable records (1995), thanks to a growth of 31% compared to the same period in 2021. A rise that is 6.8 points higher than that registered by the average for Spain (+24.4%) and is the second largest of the 10 most exporting communities, only behind the Community of Madrid.

This new record for the Andalusian foreign sector, which means exporting in five months of 2022 as much as in all of 2010, is driven by the highest growth recorded to date for a month of May (since 1995), of 44%. It is the highest of the three most exporting communities and 14 points above the national average (+28.8%). A growth with which Andalusia has sold abroad in just this month products worth 4,130 million.

With this great increase in the month of May, Andalusia has already reached 15 months of continuous and double-digit growth in its exports, prolonging the great expansionary cycle that began in March 2021 and which led to the historical annual record of 2021, with 34,552 million and a growth of 24.2% compared to 2020.

An escalation that is reinforced in the first five months of the year, when sales also grew in 19 of its first 20 markets, especially to its main non-European destinations, such as the United States (+66%), China (+53%) and Morocco (+40%) or Saudi Arabia (+404%), with which it gains in geographic diversification of sales, while continuing to advance in important European markets such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany or Portugal, where it strengthens its positions .

In 2022, the industrial complex continues to be the main driver of growth for the foreign sector in Andalusia, due to the pull of the chemical industry, whose sales are up 72% year-on-year; the aeronautical chapter, which is incorporated into the great growth, with 34% more; and foundry, which grew by 40%. At the same time, the main agri-food chapters continue the sustained growth that they have been maintaining, highlighting strong increases in olive oil, which advances 20.4%, and vegetables, 18.4%.

In all provinces

The eight Andalusian provinces contribute to the good progress of the foreign sector, since all of them increase their exports in this period and all of them do so at double digits, achieving new historical marks for this period. Among them, the growth of Cádiz stands out, with 67% more sales; Huelva, with 33% more and Córdoba, which rose 25.8%.

Imports made by Andalusia also increased in the first five months of the year, 58% over the same period of the previous year, up to 18,446 million, which places the coverage rate at 99%, only one point away from trade balance . They are 14 points above the national coverage rate, which was 85.4%, in the first five months of the year, which generates a trade deficit for the country of 26,570 million. Spain invoiced 155,970 million in sales and 182,539 million in purchases abroad.

In the first five months of 2022, Andalusia increased sales in eight of its 10 most exported chapters, almost all of them in double digits. The growth of the industrial and energy section stands out, as is the case of fuels and mineral oils, the one that rises the most and invoices the Top10, 85% year-on-year, up to 3,034 million, 16.6% of the total. The second in growth is that of chemical industry products, fifth in sales, which grows 72%, up to 833 million (4.6%); and foundry, iron and steel, in seventh position, whose sales grew by 40% to 684 million.

The aeronautical chapter also experienced a strong boost in the first five months of the year, with a rise of 34% to 626 million (3.4%), favored by the good record for the month of May, in which sales tripled over the same month of 2021 (+205%), up to 197 million. Minerals are also bolstered by the strong rise in exports in May (+278%), placing them in sixth place for the year accumulated, with a bill of 694 million (3.8%) and an increase of 24.1%. Also notable in this period is the rise in sales of ships and other floating artifacts, which multiply their data by 28 compared to the same period of the previous year, up to 277 million, placing it in 15th place.

Agri-food

This boost from the industrial sector is reinforced by the vigor of the Andalusian agri-food and beverage complex, which also shows significant growth in the sales of its main chapters: vegetables and legumes make up the second chapter in sales in Andalusia in these five months, with 2,235 million, 12.3% of the total and an increase of 18.4%; fruits remain in third position, with 1,823 million, 10% and an increase of 6.1%; and olive oil, with 1,218 million exported (6.7% of the total) shows a growth of 20.4%. It is the most exported product from Andalusia, which is part of the chapter on animal and vegetable fats and oils, fourth in sales, which as a whole grew by 31% to 1,566 million, 8.6% of the total.

The ranking of the first 10 chapters in sales closes with exports of copper and its manufactures, with a slight decrease of 4% to 575 million, 3.2%; and electrical machinery and material, with 566 million, 3.1% and a slight drop of 3.2%.

United States, China and Morocco

In the first five months of the year, the Andalusian foreign sector recorded significant progress in market diversification, growing in all geographical areas, especially in America, Asia and Africa. Thus, if in this period Andalusian exports rise by 26.2% in Europe, up to 12,483 million; They rise to 43% in America, where it exports for a value of 1,955 million; 40% in Asia, where it reaches 1,746 million; 27.8% in Africa, up to a total of 1,266 million; and 14.2% in Oceania, where it accumulates a bill of 77 million.

Along these lines, Andalusia’s sales have advanced in this period in 19 of its first 20 world destinations, highlighting the reinforcement of the foreign sector in non-European markets. The United States, the first non-EU market and fifth in the world, is the second fastest growing of the top 10, with 66% more to 1,366 million. Likewise, in China, the third non-European market and tenth in the world, sales rose 53%, to 591 million; and, in Morocco, the second non-European and eighth international destination, the increase is 40% to 805 million, 4.4% of the total.

Even so, the greatest growth between January and May in the Andalusian Top10 occurs in the Netherlands, the sixth world destination, where sales register an increase of 74% to 1,193 million, which is also accompanied by a strong rise also in its seventh market, Portugal, with 1,369 million, 7.5% and an increase of 48%, and in ninth, Belgium, from 42%, to 775 million.

In the case of the top 20 markets, Saudi Arabia, twelfth destination, is the fastest growing, multiplying sales fivefold (+404%), reaching 332 million euros, due to the strong rise in the naval chapter

As the first world destination for Andalusia, Germany continues, with 1,892 million euros, 10.4% of the total and a growth of 13.2% over the first five months of 2021; France is second, with 1,778 million, 9.8% and a rise of 11.4%; and Italy, third, with 1,651 million, 9.1%, and an increase of 22.1%. Also the United Kingdom, the seventh market in Andalusia, with 1,052 million, (5.8%), registered an interannual increase of 0.9%.
