Travelers have a fleet of trains equipped with Wi-Fi on board to access the PlayRenfe service. Also vending machines for the catering service, which has made it possible to reduce costs and, therefore, offer better prices.

The start-up was initially scheduled for April 6, 2020 and had to be postponed due to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus. Avlo starts with the most demanding certifications in terms of sanitation, disinfection and cleaning against Covid-19. Its trains have protocols certified by Aenor and by SGS, the world’s leading inspection, testing and certification company, which is an additional guarantee for all passengers.

In this way, the AVLO and Ave trains have double certification in terms of sanitation and disinfection, which constitutes a differential element of the first order in relation to any other collective transport.

The service with the greatest capacity

Avlo will become Renfe’s high-speed service with the highest passenger capacity, with 438 seats per train, 20% more seats than its current 112 series. They are capable of reaching 330 kilometers per hour. Subsequently, the new 106 series trains will be incorporated, with an even greater capacity of 581 seats each. This will mean 1,162 total seats with a double composition train. In both cases, these are electric trains, with zero emissions that contribute to sustainable transport and that run on 100% electricity from renewable sources.

This new low-price high-speed service is initially provided in the Madrid-Guadalajara-Calatayud-Zaragoza-Lleida-Tarragona-Barcelona-Girona-Figueres corridor. It is the largest high-speed corridor in terms of passenger volume, with more than seven million passengers in 2019.

The service begins with four daily circulations in each direction between Madrid and Barcelona, which can be expanded throughout the year depending on the evolution of demand, and has stops in all the cities of Renfe’s Northeast Corridor (Guadalajara, Calatayud, Zaragoza, Lleida, Tarragona, Girona and Figueres).

Avlo’s objective is to gradually expand to other corridors in the rest of Spain. In this sense, it is already planned that its service will be extended to the Madrid-Seville corridor throughout the year 2022.

These types of services are strategic for the company in the context of the liberalization of passenger transport by rail that has come into force since December 2020, and will be Renfe’s first step in the so-called high-speed low-cost services. The company works to extend the advantages of high speed to the greatest number of people, both in its Ave and Avant services, as well as in future Avlo services. Likewise, it is confident that this new low-price service can come into operation in the rest of the high-speed corridors throughout 2022 and 2023.
