Catalan, expensive and quality: these are the best supermarkets in Spain, according to the OCU

One of the most important decisions in the day to day of every Spaniard is to choose well which supermarket to make the purchase. The proximity, quality, savings, size or even the friendliness of the staff are decisive factors to stay with one establishment or another. Circumstances that the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has also used, where those based in Catalonia stand out above the rest.

The chain, which only operates in the four Catalan provinces (with the exception of one establishment in Benicarló), is the best in Spain for the OCU. This is certified by the 85 out of 100 that the institution gives it given the value of all its characteristics in general, but with great emphasis on the quality that this supermarket offers in its products.

Some articles that are not cataloged under the concept of cheap or that tend towards a savings strategy, as other chains do. Yes, with offers at its stores, the price of filling the shopping cart at BonPreu is not below the 76 euros on average that each visit to the supermarket entails for all Spanish citizens.

PlusFrés, BonÀrea and Esclat close the first four positions confirming the Catalan dominance in supermarkets

In addition, this chain with more than 130 stores is also the owner of Esclat, which is the fourth brand in the entire OCU classification. Some supermarkets that are distributed throughout the Catalan coast, hardly operate in the interior and that are also set by regional criteria, away from low prices and very good quality.

Some factors that only escape in the first four places in the third ranking (the second is for ). BonÀrea has several savings and “good price” campaigns, as well as expanding throughout Aragon, La Rioja, the Valencian Community and Madrid, in addition to focusing most of its business on Catalonia.

Aldi leads the national scene

It is necessary to drop to sixth place to see the first chain that operates throughout Spain (the fifth is the Valencian Consum), where Aldi is the unquestioned king of the national scene. With an attractive offer of low-cost products, German supermarkets have managed to generate a good network of customers who give a satisfaction score of 82 out of 100.

Hipercor, El Corte Inglés, Alcampo or Lidl appear in the following positions (with Costco and Alimerka in between), once again pointing out that the low price does not imply the approval of the consumer. Thus, proximity and quality are the two main issues that customers look at, who review the end of cash as a very key aspect (78% already pay for most purchases with a card).
