Cuts in Metro de Madrid: the closure of Line 2 between Sol and Retiro will last for weeks and a free bus will make the journey

Line 2 of the Madrid Metro will remain closed for several weeks between the Sol and Retiro stations as a result of a problem in the tunnel derived from the works carried out by the firm OHL in the Canalejas project, as reported by the Madrid Minister of Transport, Rosalía Gonzalo, and the CEO of Metro de Madrid, Borja Carabante. To bother citizens as little as possible, EMT will provide a special bus service that covers the route.

In a Metro act, the counselor explained that the interruption of the service in this section of line 2 since Friday is due to a problem derived from the works in Canalejas, and that in a meeting between Metro and OHL technicians it was decided the procedure to follow, “whatever is safest for the works and for the Metro network”, said the counselor.

Carabante, for his part, has said that “there is no specific deadline” for the reopening of the section. He estimates that the incident will last “several weeks” and has explained that it is a problem in the tunnel wall, near the Seville station, discovered by the sensors installed during the execution of a parking ramp.

The underground part of the works of the Canalejas project includes the remodeling of the public car park located in this place, which will have 400 spaces.

The CEO of Metro has said that the tunnel has been closed “as a precaution” and that in the meeting scheduled for today between OHL and Metro technicians a definitive solution to the problem was sought “to guarantee the stability of the tunnel and that there is no risk for the movement of trains”.

Carabante explained that to guarantee the mobility of the people of Madrid, the EMT has reinforced the bus lines in the area and, likewise, there will be a free alternative bus service to the part of the interrupted Metro line 2.

The future Centro Canalejas will have a 204-room hotel operated by Four Seasons, 22 private residences with hotel services, a commercial gallery of approximately 9,000 square meters, parking and a commercial office for bank use.

The owners of the complex are OHL Desarrollos (with 17.5% of the shares), Grupo Villar Mir (32.5%) and Mohari Limited (50%).
