Do the short washing machine programs consume less? We dismantled six false myths about laundry

What products are necessary to wash well? Do we have to separate the clothes? Is it true that shorter programs consume less? With so many guidelines, in many cases false, doing the laundry is complicated.

That is why the Organization of Consumers and Users has elaborated in which it unravels some of the most widespread affirmations that have very little foundation. In essence, to do laundry well, you first need a good washing machine and a good detergent.

Claim 1: Washing with many revolutions ensures better results.

Fake. The OCU affirms that the benefits of the washing machine do not depend on the speed of the spin. In addition, in his opinion, washing machines with a capacity of 7-8 kg and 1,000 or 1,200 rpm offer the best performance.

Statement 2: Anti-limescale products are essential to keep the washing machine in good condition.

It is also false. Adding an anti-limescale product to each wash is only necessary with very hard water, when washing a lot, at high temperatures (over 60°C) and with powder detergent. Washing at 30° C, it is superfluous to add them in each wash. In addition, liquid detergents already include in their composition a small amount of anti-limescale, enough to prevent scale.

Statement 3: Shorter programs consume less.

Fake. Stain removal is achieved by the sum of several factors: temperature, mechanical action, detergent and washing time. Normally, longer programs use less water, or at a lower temperature, thus offsetting these savings over time? The ‘ECO’ programs tend to be the ones that last the longest. It is true that there are some short programs that actually consume less water and less energy, but they are programs designed to wash not very dirty clothes.

Statement 4: The more detergent you use, the cleaner the clothes come out

Fake. The manufacturer’s recommended dose of detergent is designed to remove dirt. Using more detergent, on the contrary, leaves residues on the fabrics that can even cause allergies (not to mention the greater environmental impact). It is preferable to treat the complicated stain beforehand, with soap or stain remover, and then wash with the right dose.

Statement 5: If you want to have soft clothes, fabric softener is essential

Fake. In general, the fabric softener makes the laundry more scented and makes ironing easier, but it is not essential. To make fabrics feel softer to the touch, try washing at a lower temperature, and ironing the garment while it is still slightly damp.

Statement 6: Always separate white and colored clothes

Well in this case it depends. In the first washes, of course, it is better not to mix new clothes. You have to be very careful with red, black and natural fiber garments with artisan dyes. Other softer colors, or already heavily washed garments, can be mixed, washing at low temperatures.
