If you have a jar of coins where you keep the changes from your purchases, you should know that you can exchange them for bills at the Bank of Spain for free.
However, before venturing to go with a bag overflowing with cents to any of the bank’s branches, it is important that you know a series of clues that will prevent you from going home with a bag full back, since this exchange has a set of conditions.
The maximum number of currencies that the Bank of Spain admits to change is 1,000, as long as they are organized by their denomination. That is, you will have to separate the 1 euro coins from the 2 euro coins, etc.
Since this job can be tedious, the bank has two exceptions. The coins from 1 to 20 cents will not have to be organized, since they are introduced into the change machines that the entity has in the branches and there they are separated automatically.
The second exception is that you can deliver the rest of the coins (2 euros, 1 euro and 50 cents) without organizing, for example, all mixed in a jar or in a bag, as long as they add up to less than 200 coins.
Where and how to make the change
Free currency exchange is done at the Banco de España headquarters in Madrid or at any of its branches: it has 15 throughout Spain, and you can check where each one is at.
Commercial banks also offer currency exchange services, although they are not required by law to do so. For this, they may charge you a commission.
