Begoña García visits the area affected by the Las Hurdes fire (Cáceres)

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, Population and Territory, Begoña García, has visited the area affected by the Las Hurdes fire and has met with the mayors of the affected municipalities. The General Director of Forest Policy, Pedro Muñoz, has also attended.

During the meeting, the minister reported on the Action Plan that will be developed in the Urgent Action Areas, that is, in those in which it is necessary to adopt immediate conservation or restoration measures after having suffered a catastrophe or disaster. natural.

On July 11, 2022, a forest fire broke out that affected an area of ​​3,323.23 hectares in the municipalities of Ladrillar and Nuñomoral, being considered stabilized on July 18 and controlled on the 19th of the same month, it is currently extinct. Likewise, the fire has affected, in terms of wooded area, almost 2,000 hectares of resin pine, between pure and mixed stands with other species (holm oaks, chestnut trees, strawberry trees, etc.), 163 hectares of holm oaks and another 170 of mixed stands of leafy, and almost 800 hectares. scrubland (mainly heather) or no vegetation.

From now on, a series of works included in the Action Plan will begin, thanks to which the land will be classified, the actions determined, as well as their priority established, in order to avoid erosive processes, for which Priority will be given to work in areas with steep slopes with all the vegetation burned. Being declared of Public Utility, the works will be carried out by the administrations in charge and by emergency procedure.

Some of these tasks are the removal of burned wood or its felling and sanitation in the case of species that sprout from stumps or roots (bushes of holm oaks and cork oaks, eucalyptus trees, etc.), and the reduction of erosive processes as a consequence of the loss of the vegetative cover that rain runoff will cause next fall in soil washout, nutrients, and the available seed bank after the fire.

But also, the improvement and recovery of forest tracks and other infrastructures. At this point, work will be done on the maintenance of forest tracks in the area affected by the fire, which will consist of refining and planing, the construction of water passages, mouths and speed bumps along approximately 63 km of tracks.

Other actions are the recovery of infrastructures affected by the fire, such as fences, troughs or other infrastructures damaged in forest land, or forestry treatment (post-fire), differentiating mainly whether it is pine or leafy species, whose main difference is the capacity regrowth.
