Do you want to travel to the Moon? A Japanese billionaire seeks eight companions to go with him on Elon Musk’s rocket

Traveling to the Moon seems little less than a dream for a normal citizen. The feat, intended for astronauts, has gained new meaning with the mission planned by SpaceX, Elon Musk’s company, which sold all the seats on the Starship rocket to the Japanese millionaire Yusaku Maezawa, which will make it a reality. Because good old Maezawa has decided to invite eight people from anywhere in the world to share, at their expense, this adventure to the satellite with him.

The businessman, owner of the ZoZo online store chain and possessor of a fortune close to 3,000 million dollars, has announced in a video posted on YouTube that he has changed his initial intention of taking artists on his flight (he is a declared lover of art and founded the Contemporary Art Foundation of Tokyo) because, over time, he has come to believe that the term is increasingly “ambiguous”.

For this reason, he has chosen to think that “anyone who does something creative can be considered an artist” and that this opens up the range of possible candidates all over the world. Potential candidates must meet two criteria: that the activity they carry out in their daily life serves to help people or society in general and that they are capable of helping other crew members who share similar aspirations.

Maezawa has provided one of his DearMoon project to enter this kind of casting to travel to space. Requests can be made up to and including March 14 and it is expected that throughout May it will be known which people will accompany the Japanese on the trip.

The crew, including Maezawa himself, pilots and guests, will total 12 people and will depart, if there are no delays (some Starship prototypes have crashed in different tests over the past two years), during the course of 2023.

As strange as Maezawa’s invitation may seem, it has not been the only one to take place with the trip to the Moon as a backdrop. A year ago, the eccentric millionaire announced that he was looking for months after leaving the relationship he had with his partner.

On that occasion, Maezawa assured that “as the feelings of loneliness and emptiness slowly begin to rise over me, there is one thing that I think about: continuing to love a woman.” This peculiar way of understanding the way in which a person’s affection is won has been reflected in the casting that she has planned to find companions on her trip to the Moon.
