Don’t be fooled by the sunscreen: the most expensive is not the best

The Organization of Consumers and Users has published the data of an independent analysis among 15 sun protection products with SPF 30 on the market, at a time when it is time to renew these items for the holidays or increased outdoor activity and increased sun exposure.

As has happened in other published reviews, often the most expensive sunscreen on the market is not the best quality. Based on laboratory criteria and user tests, the sunscreen that achieves the best score is Nivea Sun Protect & Moisturize, whose price is 3.79 euros per 100 milliliters. Other high-quality options follow, such as La Roche Posay Anthelios cream (10.14 euros/ 100 ml), Delial Moisturizing Protective Milk (6.98 euros/ 100 ml) and Apivita Suncare (14.63 euros/ 100 ml ). At the top of the table are also the protective cream products from Eucerin, Avéne, Biotherm, Vichy and Nivea Sun Protege & Tan.

The analysis in the laboratory has taken into account factors such as the complete composition of the creams, penalizing the presence of questionable substances to fulfill the functionality of the product; the real protection against UVA rays and the coincidence of the sun protection factor with that announced on the label (factor 30 must be able to block 97% of UVB ultraviolet rays).

In the lower part of the table, classified by the OCU study as low-quality plots, there are some with a great difference in price compared to the ones best valued by the laboratory. Thus, a brand as well known as Piz Buin fails in its composition and analysis, receiving only a 13 as a score and with a cost that doubles that of the best valued Nivea (and with a laboratory score of 70). Biosolis Lait Solaire, with the high cost of 16.77 euros/100 ml, or Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration are also classified in the poor quality section.
