Duplicate posts and pages in WordPress – .com

In this tutorial we are going to see how we can clone a post or page in WordPress quickly and easily.

Clone content in WordPress

If you are reading this article, you may need to know how to duplicate a post easily. As we know, in WordPress we have the option to go to the HTML view, copy the content of the article, create a new one, paste it from the HTML view of the latter, fill in the rest of the options and save.

The process is totally manual, so we will have to copy and paste or transfer the options of each field, be it the category or the title of the entry, to give some examples, which can slow down the task. So if we tend to clone posts or pages frequently, or we are going to need to do it with some regularity, this way, although it is functional, is not the most efficient.

A method that will make our work easier and, above all, will speed it up, will be to use one of the plugins available in WordPress that allow us to duplicate posts or entire pages with a single click.

In this case, we are going to talk about the Duplicate Page plugin, an extension with a free and premium version, which will allow us to clone articles, pages, and even our own CPTs. We will see that with the free version we will be able to do it. With all that said, let’s get started!

Installation and plugin options

As always, the first thing we have to do is install the plugin. To do this we go to the WordPress desktop, “Plugins / Add new”, and insert the name of it, “Duplicate Page” into the search engine.

Once we have located it, we will click on “Install now”, and as soon as it is installed we can activate it. This will create a new menu entry in “Settings/Duplicate page”, so we are going to access it to see the options offered to us from this section.

  • Duplicate Entry Status: In this field we can select between several options: “Draft”, “Publish”, “Private” and “Pending”, so that the chosen value will be assigned to the new entry or page that is created when duplicating the article. As long as we don’t select another option, duplicate posts or pages will appear in “Draft” which is the default option.
  • Where to redirect after duplicating: When clicking to duplicate a post or page in WordPress using this plugin, we can be redirected “To the list of all entries” or “To the duplicate editing screen”. If we select the first destination, just click to clone the content, the content will be cloned and we will be redirected to the “Posts” or “Pages” menu option depending on whether we are duplicating a post or a page.
  • Duplicate Entry Suffix: When we clone an article or blog page, by default, its title is copied as is. In order to differentiate it, Duplicate Page offers us the possibility of adding text that will work as a suffix, behind the title. Adding something like “Copy”, “Clone”, etc. here will help us determine at a glance that it is the copy of the article.

Also comment here that, although at all times we have been talking about articles and posts, as we explained in the first section of this tutorial, this plugin also allows you to clone Custom Post Types, so we can use it in the same way.

Duplicate Page Settings

Well, in this case we are going to make a couple of very simple adjustments, these will depend on the preferences of each one, so we can choose other options.

First, we’ll keep the status of the duplicate post at “Draft”, then we’ll select the “To duplicate edit screen” option for the “Where to redirect after Duplicate” field, and finally we’ll add the “Copy” suffix. Then we will save the changes.

And now yes, everything is ready to clone any content. To do this, we will first have to access the list of entries, pages or the CPTs in question. When hovering over any item, we will see that we have the “Duplicate” option available.

So we will simply have to press it to duplicate any content, which will automatically appear below with the same title plus the word “Copy”, as you can see below:

Very easy, right? Well, you know, if you need to use this functionality often, this plugin will save you a lot of time, especially if you create content daily with the same type of schema.

Summary and conclusion

There are several plugins that will help us duplicate content in WordPress. In this case we have used Duplicate Page, a freemium extension whose free version will allow us to clone posts, pages or CPTs in just one click.

To use it, we must install and activate it, make a few small adjustments, and access the list of posts, pages, or custom entries that we have created. Once there, we will find in the menu of each of them the option to duplicate them.
