It may be that, in an extraordinary way, you have detected at some point that access to your website has been interrupted even though the servers of your hosting provider are working normally.

It may be due to the fact that some network providers see their connectivity at the DNS level affected, thus presenting some specific incidents that affect the visibility of your page.

In this article we will see how to know if you cannot see your website because it does not resolve your domain and how to modify the DNS in your network configuration for those of Google to solve it.

My domain doesn’t resolve and I can’t see my website

To find out if your domain does not resolve and that is the reason why you cannot see your website, access your page from the browser and check if a message like this is displayed:

How to modify the DNS in your network configuration?

Modify DNS on different operating systems

At this point, let’s see how to correctly change the DNS in your network configuration to Google’s public ones, depending on the operating system your computer has.

Windows 7, 8.1 and 10

  • click on Start (lower left corner of the screen), and then Setting > Network and Internet > Wi-Fi (or Ethernet if you are connected by cable to the router).

  • Choose Manage known networkschoose the network you want to change settings for, and then select Properties.
  • In IP assignment, select Edit.
  • Under Edit IP Settings, select Automatic (DHCP) or Manual.
    • When selecting Automatic (DHCP)the IP address and DNS server address settings are set automatically by the router or other access point (this is the recommended setting, but in this case we want to change it to manual).
    • When selecting Manualyou can manually configure the IP address and DNS server address settings.
  • Under Edit IP settings, choose Manual and then activate IPv4.
    • To specify an IP addressin the IP Address, Subnet Prefix Length, and Gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.
    • To specify a DNS server addressin the Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.

  • edit the file /etc/resolv.conf. You can open it with some text editing utility or, from the terminal: nano /etc/resolv.conf.
  • In this file you will see the DNS information (NameServers); change the IP’s that appear for the Google DNS
  • Reboot the system and edit the file /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf adding at the end:
    • supersede domain-name-servers XX.XX.XX.XX, YY.YY.YY.YY;
    • (XX.XX.XX.XX is the primary DNS IP and YY.YY.YY.YY is the secondary one)
  • Save the file.
  • Make sure the changes have taken effect by running in a terminal: /etc/init.d/networking restart

Conclusions

The most important concept to stick with is that when you open a web page, or try to view your emails, there are three links that come into play:

  • Your internet company.
  • The server where that web page is hosted.
