Google releases frequent updates to improve the performance, stability, and security of its flagship Chrome browser. Major version updates also improve the browsing experience with new features and hidden experimental flags. Discover how to fix chrome not updating on windows
Chrome updates to the latest version a few days after launch to make sure you don’t miss a thing. But you can also start an update manually to get up to speed faster.
However, if the Windows version of Chrome doesn’t update on its own, hangs during a manual update, or throws an error code, here are several likely reasons:
- Network related issues
- compatibility issues
- Incorrectly configured Google update service
- Malicious extensions and browser hijackers
- Corrupt or missing files
In most cases, you can identify the problem behind a failed Chrome update by accessing the About Chrome screen (open the menu Plus and select Aid > About Google Chrome ). For example, an error message with the codes 3 , eleven , 7 Y 12 indicates complications with network connectivity.
The following solutions can fix most update related issues in Google Chrome on Windows. It’s best to quit and restart your browser as you go through each fix.
Quit Chrome and restart your PC.
One of the first things you can do to find out how to fix Chrome not updating on Windows is to restart your PC, this can resolve many minor errors and glitches that appear randomly and prevent Chrome from updating. So do it now and try another Chrome update before moving on to the rest of the fixes.
Run the built-in network troubleshooters
Let’s say a failed Chrome update points to a faulty Internet connection or hotspot. In that case, running Windows’ built-in network-related troubleshooters can help you diagnose and fix Chrome not updating.
1. Open the menu Start and select Setting .
2. Select Update and security .
3. Switch to tab Solve problems .
4, select Additional troubleshooters .
5. Run the troubleshooter internet connections .
6. Follow the recommended suggestions to solve the problems detected by the troubleshooter.
7. Scroll down the screen Additional troubleshooters and run the troubleshooters from incoming connections Y network adapters .
Flush the DNS cache
An outdated Domain Name System (DNS) cache is preventing Chrome from connecting to Google’s update servers. Deleting it should help fix it.
1. Press Windows + X to open the power user menu. Then select Windows PowerShell (Admin) .
2. Type the following command and press Get in :
ipconfig /flushdns
3. Exit Windows PowerShell.
Renew your computer’s IP lease
If you’re experiencing spotty internet connection throughout Chrome, try resetting your PC’s IP (Internet Protocol) lease.
1. Press Windows + X and select Windows PowerShell (Admin) .
2. Run the following commands one after another:
ipconfig / release
ipconfig /renew
3. Exit Windows PowerShell.
Reset router and network settings
If Chrome continues to have problems connecting to or downloading from Google’s update servers, try resetting your router. If that fails, you need to reset network settings in Windows.
Disable or reconfigure compatibility mode
If you’ve set Chrome to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP or Windows Vista, you can’t update the browser because Google no longer supports both operating systems. Turning off compatibility mode (or selecting Windows 7 or later) may help fix this.
1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut of Google Chrome and select Properties .

3. Select Apply > To accept to save the changes.
Disable Chrome Extensions
Extensions help improve functionality in Chrome, but they can also create conflicts and prevent the browser from updating. Try disabling them before trying another update.
To do so, open the menu extensions (located in the upper right corner of the screen) and select Manage extensions . Then turn off the switches next to each active extension.
Check for harmful software
Failed Chrome updates can also be caused by malicious extensions, browser hijackers, and other forms of harmful software.
To help you deal with that, Chrome comes with a built-in malware scanner in the browser. open the menu Plus from Chrome and go to Setting > Restore and clean > clean computer to run it.
If Chrome manages to detect and remove harmful software, run a system-wide malware scan using Windows Security or a reputable third-party malware removal utility.
Check firewall settings
If you use a third-party anti-malware utility with a built-in firewall, open its settings panel and make sure that Google Chrome Y google-installer ( GoogleUpdate.exe ) have permissions to connect to the Internet.
You should also make sure that you have not restricted access to the following websites:
- tools.google.com
- dl.google.com
Alternatively, it may also help to disable third-party anti-malware utilities running on your computer during the update.
If you’re only using Windows security, check your Windows Firewall rules and settings to confirm there aren’t any issues.
Reconfigure the Google update service
Chrome relies on a background service called Google Update Service to apply updates automatically. If it consistently doesn’t (as in, you can only refresh the browser manually), you need to set the service to start along with the operating system.
1. Press Windows + R to open the Run box. Then write services.msc and select To accept to open the Services applet.
2. Find and double-click the entry named Google Update Service (gupdate) .
3. Set the start type in Automatic .
4. Select Apply > To accept to save the changes.
5. Find and double-click Google Update Service (gupdatem) and repeat the steps 3 β 4 .
6. Restart your computer.
Reset Google Chrome
If the above fixes don’t resolve Chrome not updating, you need to reset Chrome. That should resolve any corrupt or conflicting settings that are preventing the browser from updating.
You won’t lose any personal data like bookmarks, history, or passwords, but we recommend that you sync your data with a Google account (if you haven’t already) as a precaution.
To reset Chrome, open the dashboard Setting from Chrome and go to Advanced > reset and clean > Reset all settings to default . Then select Reset settings for confirm.
Reinstall Google Chrome
If resetting Chrome didn’t help, you need to reinstall it from scratch. Not only does that install the latest version of the browser, but the procedure should also take care of any corrupted or missing files that prevent Chrome from updating in the future.
Since you will lose all data, you need to sync your bookmarks, passwords and settings with a Google account. Then go to Start > Setting > Apps and features and select Google Chrome > uninstall .
Next, delete all remaining Chrome installation folders in the following directory:
- Local disk (C π > Program files > Google > Chrome
Once you’ve done that, or the and run it to reinstall Google Chrome.
Update the operating system
Windows Update itself helps fix known system-related bugs that prevent Chrome from working or updating normally. If you haven’t for a while, try applying the latest OS updates now.
1. Open the menu Start and go to Setting > Update and security > windows update .
2. Select Search for updates .
3. Select Download and install to update the operating system.
