You may not have the advanced features of dedicated utilities like Lastpass or 1Password. But Chrome’s built-in offering still packs a punch on something so basic.

Sign in to Chrome with a Google account

Before you begin, we strongly recommend that you sign in to Chrome with one (if you haven’t already). This prompts the browser to back up your browsing information (passwords, bookmarks, history, etc.) to Google’s servers in real time, and also allows you to sync data with other devices you own.

To sign in to Chrome, choose the profile icon at the top right of the browser screen and select activate synchronization . Then enter your Google account credentials and select Yes I accept .

By default, Chrome automatically prompts you to save a password every time you sign in to a website for the first time. When that happens, select Save .

If you don’t see one password to save? notification shortly after signing in, select the key-shaped icon in the address bar to bring it up. Before saving, you can change the username or password if any of them appear incorrect.

Advice: As long as the usernames are different, Chrome can store multiple passwords for the same site.

Chrome is also capable of detecting account registration forms and has the ability to suggest strong alphanumeric passwords. Simply select the password field and choose Use suggested password .

The browser should prompt you to save your login details shortly after you’ve finished signing up.

Whenever you revisit a login page with a saved set of credentials, Chrome should fill in the username and password automatically.

If a site has multiple passwords, simply select the username or password fields and you should be able to switch between them.

How to view passwords in Google Chrome

Chrome allows you to view saved passwords whenever you want. Start by opening the menu Plus . Then go to Setting > passwords to display a list of your passwords in alphabetical order.

On desktop, you can also select your Chrome profile portrait at the top right of the screen and select the icon passwords to invoke the list.

If you see dozens of entries, you can search for a specific password by typing a website name in the search area at the top of the screen. Matching entries should be filtered out as you type.

For security reasons, Chrome hides all passwords in the list. To display a password (so you can copy it to the clipboard, for example), select the icon Show password shaped like an eye that is next to it.

You then need to enter the password (or PIN) of your PC or Mac user account to authenticate the action. On mobile devices, just use device biometrics.

Whenever you change the password of a website and then log in with a new password, you can select update password to update the entry stored in Chrome’s password manager. But if you don’t, you can edit the password directly.

While viewing your list of Chrome passwords, select the three dots icon next to an entry and choose edit password . On mobile devices, just choose the password and touch Edit .

In the pop-up box that appears, select the fields Username Y Password to make the modifications. Then select Save .

How to remove passwords in Google Chrome

If you have redundant password entries in Chrome or just want to remove some, you can choose to remove them.

Start by going to Setting > passwords . Then select the three-dot icon next to the password you want to remove and choose the option Remove . On mobile devices, touch Edit > Remove while viewing a password. If you want to restore a deleted password, select Undo immediately.

How to remove websites from never saved list

At the bottom of the Chrome Passwords screen, you’ll find a list labeled never saved . If you prevent the browser from saving a password, the corresponding website will be added to it. That prevents the browser from bothering you every time you log in to the site.
