I understand that after installing the thumbnail regeneration plugin you have executed the regeneration process and still the thumbnails do not appear?
It is strange that if you have the organization option changed months ago, just in August this problem occurs
Check in the path where the image is stored if you have other images with the same initial name but with another dimension, that is, every time an image is uploaded parallel files are created, some of them are thumbnails
You could consider installing a more advanced image management plugin, check out:
