Last hours to file Form D-6: this is how you have to declare your investments abroad

The year 2020 marked the entry of many new investors to the stock markets. The confinements increased the savings of families and, some of them, chose to invest part of those funds for the first time through some of the brokers with the lowest commissions in the market. However, in several of these cases, the other side of the coin is bureaucracy: it involves personally filling out forms that other brokers automatically provide to the Public Administration by hand. This is the case of the D-6 model, for Spanish investments abroad, which can be submitted until January 31.

The D-6 is the form by which the investor declares to the Government of Spain that as of December 31, 2020, he had certain investments in a broker that is not based in our country. Among the best known of these brokers are DeGiro, eToro, XTB, Revolut or Interactive Brokers. Although the presentation of the model does not entail any type of payment in the form of fees or taxes, it is mandatory to deliver it, and may be penalized with a fine of up to 600 euros if it is done after the deadline, and 25% of the undeclared amount if it is not presents, with a minimum of 3,000 euros.

In the D-6, the investor must collect the shares, ETFs and investment funds that he had in his portfolio at the end of the previous year, but not other products such as options, currencies or CFDs. The value of the investments, in this case, is irrelevant: you are obliged to present it so that the State knows that you have those possessions, since the aforementioned brokers do not notify the Public Administration by default. The same happens if your shares are Spanish but you trade them through the aforementioned cases.
