Mahle announces the closure of its plant in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona)

The German automotive multinational Mahle has announced this Wednesday to the workers of its plant in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona) that it plans to apply an employment regulation file (ERE) to dismiss its 343 employees, which would also mean the closure of the fabric.

The CCOO union of Catalonia has explained, in a statement, that the company’s decision is part of the transformation process in which the automotive sector is immersed, with the challenge of electrification ahead, and has demanded that it be done “a just transition”. Likewise, the company has ensured that the other six factories it has in Spain will not be affected by this measure.

The union center has rejected the file and has urged Mahle to back down and look for alternatives to guarantee the viability of the plant, dedicated to manufacturing automotive components.

In addition, he has called for the involvement of the Catalan and state administrations due to “the great impact” that the announcement of the ERE has on the industrial fabric of the Garraf region and has called for investments so that the automotive sector adapts to the changes that has ahead.

The German multinational announced a year ago its intention to cut 7,600 jobs worldwide, of which 2,000 had to leave Germany and 1,700 from the rest of Europe, to adapt to the transformation of the sector and face the fall in the automobile demand for Covid-19.

Stuttgart-based Mahle employs 77,000 people in 30 countries, including Spain, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

In Catalonia, it has factories in L’Espluga de Francolí (Tarragona) and Vilanova i la Geltrú (Barcelona). The rest of the plants in Spain are located in Boecillo (Valladolid), Motilla del Palancar (Cuenca), Palencia, Paterna (Valencia) and Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid).
