In this tutorial we will see how to manage pages in the WordPress control panel. A review of all possible options for good management.

Pages in WordPress are a very important element. Thanks to them we can create new content quickly and dynamically, simply by adding a new page and that’s it. Before they existed, there were only “Entries”, and everything was much more limited. If you want to understand WordPress in detail, you can read this tutorial.

So, as I say, pages allow us to create structured and hierarchical content, since each page can have as many subpages as we want, and in turn those subpages can have subpages, and so on until we get fed up. Also, the remaining URL structure is very clean and usable.

Well, it becomes clear that the pages are very interesting, useful and convenient. Let’s see now how to administer and manage them.

Manage pages in WordPress

The WordPress page admin panel is pretty straightforward and looks like this:

As you can see, it is basically a list of pages. In the list we can see the title, the author, the number of comments and the date of publication. And it is also possible that if we have some plugins installed (such as the one from ) many others appear.

Except for the title, all the elements can be hidden in case we don’t need them. We have to go to “Screen Options” and there we have a selector that allows us to hide the ones we don’t want:

Most of the time, the date is of no use at all, and comments aren’t even enabled for pages. And if our website also has a single author, it doesn’t make much sense to show all that. So, we can simplify it so that it looks like this:

And while we’re there, we can also modify the number of pages we see. By default, only 20 are listed and to see the rest we have to change the page, but if we change the number here, we can as many as we want on a single screen.

Filtering the pages that are displayed

In principle, this list of pages includes all of them, but we have the possibility of filtering them by dates and by search. We can select the dates from the upper drop-down, where we can choose by month:

On the other hand, we can also perform a search in the upper right box. In this case, searching for “test” only 6 results appear:

This option is quite useful if we have many pages and we want to find one that we cannot locate, simply by entering a word that we remember that appeared in the title or in the content.

Managing Subpages

When we create a subpage, it appears immediately below the top page, and we can see a dash indicating that it is a subpage. And the same thing happens if we create a subpage of that subpage, but in that case two scripts appear:

While it is true that this indicates the hierarchy of pages and subpages, we can also say that it leaves a bit to be desired, especially if we have a lot of content and several hierarchical levels.

Quick links are a way to edit pages without having to go into them. We simply have to go over it and four options will appear: Edit, quick edit, trash and view.

The “Edit” option does the same as if we clicked on the title. It will simply open its editing page. “Trash” sends it to the recycle bin, and “View” sends us to the web, to see the page as any visitor would.

Special attention has the “Quick edition” option, which if we select it shows us several options to modify:

In summary, from this view we can modify:

  • Title: The title of the page
  • Slug: The text that will appear in the URL
  • Date: Date that you will assign to the page, although it is not normally displayed
  • Author: Author of the page, in the event that there are several users on that website
  • Password: Password that must be entered to view the page (optional)
  • Superior: Superior page (if we use it, the page would be a subpage)
  • Order: Optional number to order the pages in the administration panel
  • Template: Template used by the page. Optional and depends on each theme.
  • Allow comments: If we select this box, the page will allow comments.
  • Status: Whether the page is published, pending review, or as a draft.

Thus, we can see that the quick edition is very comfortable to modify all these attributes from the list of pages, without having to enter one by one. But if we also want to do the same action in several of them, we have an even more comfortable method. Shares in batch.

All the pages in the list have a checkbox, the white square that appears to the left of the title. This is used to be able to select several of them, and then apply an action in batch. These actions can be found in the drop-down menu located at the top left:

Currently there are two batch actions available. Edit and move to trash. “Move to Trash” is pretty self explanatory. And the “Edit” one is a quick edit like the one we’ve seen before, but for multiple pages. If we select it and click “Apply” we see the following:

As you can see, on the left it lists the pages that we are going to modify, and on the right what we are going to modify. In this case, the author, the top page, the template to use, if it allows comments and the status. Five options that we had in the quick edition. Obviously, we cannot change things like the title, the slug and the date, because if we did, we would be placing the same title in all of them, which does not make any sense.

In short, we can see that WordPress page management is very simple and useful, but that it has some shortcomings, such as a better way to show the different hierarchies.
