Michelin places its decision center for Spain and Portugal in Valladolid

Michelin Spain and Portugal reaffirms its commitment to Valladolid and Castilla y León. The tire firm has moved its headquarters from the Madrid town of Tres Cantos to the city of Pisuerga, with which it locates its command center, with the general director Paz Rovina, at the helm, in this capital.

The change became effective in September of last year and represents a further step in the consolidation of Valladolid as an automotive city, since it also houses an important industrial facility for the tire manufacturer, Renault and Iveco factories. In addition to the Valladolid plant, Michelin also has a plant in Aranda de Duero (Burgos).

The multinational began its activities in the Castilian and Leonese capital in 1973, with which next year it will celebrate its 50th anniversary since its establishment in this city.

The company’s decision has been recognized by the City Council of the capital, which also in September 2020 approved the change of name of the roundabout where the factory is located, which has been renamed Bibendum, the name of the iconic logo of the signature.

The transfer of the headquarters also has an important symbolic effect not only for the capital but for the entire region, which has been suffering for years from the ‘leakage’ of companies in favor of the Community of Madrid. In this sense, CEOE Castilla y León has been denouncing the damages that the productive fabric is supposed to suffer, compared to other territories that have a higher business density and the turnover period is much longer. A circumstance that Michelin will escape, since for large multinationals the inspection unit works as a single district in Spain.

Last year, Castilla y León registered a negative balance of 82 companies due to changes in registered office, according to the study published by Informa D&B. A total of 190 companies decided to move their headquarters in this period to the community compared to the 272 that marched towards other autonomies. Madrid benefited from 69% of these transfers.

However, considering the billing, Castilla y León was the autonomous community that added the most with these business movements, a total of 2,152 million, thanks to the transfer of Michelin.

tax effects

For tax purposes, the move will not have a significant impact. The largest tax paid by companies is the Corporation Tax. This tax is state-owned, so the place of headquarters does not influence: it is collected by the Tax Agency and redistributed among the communities based on the regional financing system.

The Economic Activities Tax is paid in the place where each of the headquarters, offices or branches of a company is located, so it would continue as before.

They will mean new income in the case of the Patrimonial Transfer Tax and Documented Legal Acts, of an autonomous nature.

The French giant has factories in Lasarte (Guipúzcoa), with 488 employees; Vitoria (Álava), with 3,349 workers, Aranda de Duero (Burgos), with 1,205, and Valladolid (1,616). It also has offices in Tres Cantos (Madrid), where the commercial address is located, an R&D center in Almería (179) and a distribution center in Illescas.

Reference in Industry 4.0

The Valladolid factory is the most recent of the four that the company has in Spain. On October 2, 1973, it manufactured its first tire in this city.
Currently, it manufactures tires for tourism, agricultural and renewed. The plant is one of the benchmarks in industry 4.0 and in the development of the brand’s technological advances. One of them has been the teleinflation system for agricultural vehicles awarded at FIMA.
