My Best Friend’s Wedding: What songs are used in the Mexican version?

It was in 1997 when the American director PJ Hogan managed to reunite Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, two of the actresses with the most experience in Hollywood, in one of the public’s favorite romantic comedies: ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’, known in Mexico as ‘ My best friend’s Wedding’; 22 years later, in our country, it is about giving a new air to this story… with a very questionable result.

In the Mexican version of the film, Ana Serradilla takes the role of Julia Roberts, and Natasha Dupeyrón that of Cameron Diaz; Carlos Ferro, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Mónica Huarte and Minnie West complete the equation.

Although the investment of the Mexican filmmakers is remarkable, and the effort of the actors and the director to achieve an acceptable result in the remake, one of the most important elements of the original version puts this production in check: the music.

The soundtrack used in ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ was so popular at the time that it was even sold on a compact disc, which can now be heard on digital platforms such as Spotify; on the other hand, the original music by James Newton Howard got an Oscar nomination, in 1998.

And in Mexico…

Economy Today tells you what songs were used in our country at the key points of this love story.

The first big musical moment of ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ comes in its opening seconds, when Ani DiFranco’s ‘Wishin and Hopin’, pink, wedding dresses and rings flood the screen.

In the 2019 version, the intro was replaced by an animation in which the song ‘I want you to love me’ by Espumas y Terciopelo can be heard in the background… and we must admit that the song is good.

In the original version, we can hear Cameron Diaz singing very badly in karaoke; the theme used is ‘I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself’.

In Mexico, the chosen song was ‘Yo No Te Pido la Luna’ by Daniela Romo. By the way, this singer makes a very special appearance in the new version.

If a song represents the film starring Julia Roberts, it is ‘I Say a Little Prayer (For You)’; The theme occupies an important place among fans of the film, as it can be heard in the emblematic restaurant scene and towards the end.

In Mexico, they opted for ‘Amante Bandido’ by Miguel Bosé… and people are not very happy.

And now, perhaps the greatest sacrilege to the original story (if the ‘Lover Bandido’ thing didn’t end up making you spill bile).

At the end of the film, Julia Roberts’ character offers her best friend and Cameron Diaz’s character a song as a wedding gift: ‘The Way You Look Tonight’, voiced by Tony Bennett.

For the story, the theme is important, since it is a song that represents the affection that the character of Julia Roberts shares with her friend.

In Mexico we don’t listen to Tony Bennett, but we do listen to Benny Ibarra, the member of Timbiriche, with ‘Cielo’.

What to say to this? That those who made the Mexican version should not release the CD with the soundtrack of their film…
