Nolotil, Enantyum and Adiro, the best-selling drugs in Spanish pharmacies

Nolotil is the medicine that Spaniards bought the most in pharmacies in 2018. About 18 million boxes (17.8 million) were sold last year in our country by the German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim of this product, which has been in business for 50 years. marketing in Spain. Nolotil, a magnesium dipyrone (metamizole)-based analgesic, was marketed for the first time in Spain in September 1966. It is financed by the National Health System and its price does not exceed 2.5 euros.

Another painkiller, Enantyum, was the second best-selling drug last year, with 13.6 million boxes dispensed in Spanish pharmacies. The drug, which the Italian laboratory Menarini manufactures for everyone from its factory in Badalona, ​​costs 4 euros with a prescription, and although it lost its patent in 2014 and has generic versions, it is still the brand, as in the case of Nolotil, that continues to have the trust of users.

Low-dose aspirin Adiro, from the German pharmaceutical company Bayer, closed the podium of best-selling drugs in the pharmacy last year, with 13.1 million boxes. This antiaggregant, used to prevent thrombus formation, has a retail price of 1.45 euros.

Paracetamol, however, continues to be, as a whole, the product most in demand by Spaniards. Last year’s sales of paracetamol from the Catalan company Kern Pharma, which totaled 12.8 million boxes, along with Cinfa from Navarre, with 7.9 million, make it the most demanded drug with 20.7 million, according to a report of the Business Federation of Spanish Pharmacists (FEFE), with data from the specialized consultancy Iqvia.

With 8.6 million boxes sold last year, the drug Eutirox, the most used pill from the German laboratory Merck for thyroid control, was in fifth place in this ranking.

Another drug manufactured in Spain, Ventolin, which the British pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline produces in Aranda de Duero, was the seventh best-selling drug, with 7.4 million boxes. An ibuprofen, the one marketed by the Catalan company Kern Pharma, with 7 million boxes; and the famous anxiolytic Orfidal, from the US laboratory Pfizer, with 6.6 million boxes, close the list of the 10 best-selling drugs this year.

Higher earnings

By volume of sales, the drug with the highest income last year in Spanish pharmacies was the anticoagulant Clexane, from the French Sanofi, with sales of 200 million euros. GlaxoSmithKline’s urinary retention drug Duodart followed in this ranking, with revenue of $146 million last year.

The Eliquis anticoagulant, marketed by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer, reached 142 million. Spiriva, from BMS, with 135 million; Lantus, from Sanofi, with 132 million; Prolia, from Amgen, with 132 million; Xarelto, from Pfizer, with 127 million; Bexsero, from GSK, with 122 million; and the anticoagulant Hibor, from Rovi, with 108 million, close the list by volume of income.
