Ranking: The best universities in the world 2020

They are located in the US and the UK, according to the classification issued by the World University Ranking of the 1,000 Best Universities in the World 2020. The list -prepared by the higher education analyst company Quacquarelly Symonds- has academic reputation as evaluation criteria (40 percent), citations in scholarly articles (20 percent), faculty-student ratio (20 percent), employee reputation (10 percent), and international faculty-student ratio (5 percent each).

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University and Harvard University occupy the top three spots. The University of Oxford continues to be the best educational institution in the UK. However, most US and UK universities have fallen in rank this year. In most cases it is due to a lower score in terms of the proportion of international students.

Only one Latin American university managed to appear among the top hundred

Only one Latin American university managed to appear among the top hundred and it was the University of Buenos Aires, in Argentina. Spanish institutions are from position 165, with the University of Barcelona. Of the 27 Spanish universities that appear in the ranking, 14 have dropped in position.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (United States)

Independent, mixed and private university that is organized into five schools. Initially, it was a small community of science lovers. Today it has become an educational giant with more than 11,000 students.

Stanford University (United States)

It has one of the largest university campuses in the United States, with 18 interdisciplinary research institutes and seven schools. It has 19 Nobel laureates within its community and is regularly ranked among the top three in the world.

Harvard University (United States)

It is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. The campus is home to ten degree-granting schools, two theaters, and five museums. It has a total of 21,000 students who belong to the academic elite and who are active with more than 400 official student societies.

It is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and has a total of 22,000 students. The percentage of foreign students amounts to 40 percent. It does not have a main campus, its buildings and facilities are scattered throughout the center of the city. It has four academic divisions.

University of Cambridge (UK)

It is a chartered public research institution serving more than 18,000 students. The university is divided into 31 charter colleges and six academic schools. Alumni represent 20 percent of the city’s population and its 800-year history makes it the fourth oldest university in the world.

University College London (UK)

UCL is one of the world’s best multidisciplinary universities, with an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching. International students make up almost half of the student population and come from more than 150 countries.

Imperial College London (UK)

It is a one-of-a-kind institution in the UK, focusing solely on science, engineering, medicine and business. One of the most distinctive elements is that students join a community of researchers. 59 per cent of its student body in the 2018-2019 academic year were not UK citizens and more than 140 countries are represented on campus.

University of Chicago (United States)

It is a private research institution and the third most populous city in the United States. Today, this university has approximately 16,000 students enrolled, with a male to female ratio of 56-44. A quarter of all alumni come from abroad, a nod to the institution’s progressive credentials. In addition, they are responsible for many academic disciplines, such as sociology or economics.
