Store backup copies in Google Drive with UpdraftPlus – .com

In this tutorial we are going to see how to store backups in Google Drive with the UpdraftPlus plugin.

Backups in WordPress

Backups or backups are essential when resolving any incident that can occur on a website. Sometimes there are incompatibilities between plugins, we delete a file, we touch another and whatever mishap occurs, and we may need to restore everything as it was before making the changes.

However, it is one of those things that some people continue to ignore and pay attention to only when it is too late. By the way, if you are interested in WordPress issue resolution, he can save the day (and the web), although it is better to prepare and have the copies ready just in case :).

It is true that many accommodations create backup copies of the site automatically, but it does not hurt, and in fact it is our responsibility, to maintain and create backups periodically to have a replica of our website as up-to-date as possible at all times.

Perhaps if WordPress had the option to create backups as standard, it would make the matter easier, although the reality is that it is very easy to integrate this functionality through plugins.

In fact there are several, we have BackupBuddy, VaultPress, UpdraftPlus and many other options available. And not only that, with some we can choose to save the copies in an external storage instead of taking up space on the hosting where we have the web hosted, isn’t it great?

Well let’s see it, in this case we will work with one of the plugins that we have named, UpdraftPlus, a freemium plugin with very interesting free features that makes it easy and simple to make and restore backup copies, as well as upload them to the cloud directly and save them in one of the services to which the plugin can connect. Let us begin!.

Connect UpdraftPlus and Google Drive

We will start from a website with the UpdraftPlus plugin installed and activated. To begin we must go to “Settings/UpdraftPlus Backups”, and then click on the “Settings” tab. From here we can change the configuration of the scheduled backups, as well as set a time for them.

A little further down, UpdraftPlus offers us the possibility of set up external storage where to save the backups We can connect it with Dropbox, as we see in the fifth class of the , with the Amazon S3 service, or even with Google Drive among other options.

It is also possible to save the copies in more than one location by purchasing an extra plugin offered by UpdraftPlus. Well, depending on the tool that we select, some configuration fields or others will be shown, since depending on it, it will need some specific settings. In this case we are going to choose to use Google Drive, so we are going to click on this option.

Next, some fields will be loaded that will allow us to change the name of the folder that will contain the backups, or select the files that we want to save and some other options.

We are going to leave everything as it comes by default, we will simply click on “Save changes” and we will proceed to grant the necessary permissions as we will see in the image.

Authenticate us in Google Drive

Well, we have already selected the application that we are going to use, now we have to authorize access to our Google Drive account. As soon as the changes are saved, a window will open with a link that we must click and that says something like “Follow this link to authorize access to your Google Drive account (you will not be able to make backup copies in Google Drive if you do not perform this step )”.

Then it will ask us to enter the gmail account with which we want to log in to Google. Once we do, it will inform us that UpdraftPlus needs to access our account and we will have to click on “Allow”. We will immediately go to the last step where we are asked to press the “Complete Setup” button, with which we will finish the configuration.

And that’s it, this will take us back to WordPress, specifically to the UpdraftPlus “Settings” tab, to communicate the success of the authentication / authorization process.

create backup

Well, after carrying out these steps, everything is ready to carry out the first backup, as well as the successive ones, and that they are saved in the external storage, in this case in Google Drive, which is the service that we have chosen.

To create the first backup we do not have to move from the current page since the option is found in the tab that opens by default “Make backup / Restore”, we only have to click on “Back up now”. Once done, the following window will be displayed:

As we can see, from it we can indicate that we want this backup to be stored in the application that we previously configured, so we only have to click on “Back up now” to start the process.

At that moment, the backup will begin to be created, which at the end we will have available both from WordPress, to be able to restore the copy if necessary, and from Google Drive.

Summary and conclusion

Having updated backup copies of our website is essential to have a backup in case of incidents and to speed up its recovery. Although this functionality is not available by default in WordPress, there are many plugins that allow us to do it and with which we can also store backups outside of the hosting where we have the site hosted.

In this case we have seen how to configure UpdraftPlus to save a copy of our data in Google Drive, we can also do it with Dropbox as we see in .
