Surprising power in a very small speaker: we tested the Huawei Sound Joy

The new Huawei Sound Joy is a portable speaker developed in collaboration with Devialet, which has become one of the best options if we need powerful, quality sound.

With this launch, the Chinese brand extends beyond the smartphones and laptops for which it has become famous in Spain. While this isn’t the first speaker it’s released (it already offered the Huawei Sound for the home), the big difference is that this one is portable, and small enough to take anywhere.

The competition in this subsector is tough, and that is why it is surprising that Huawei has achieved a very attractive product, both in functionality and in sound, as I have been able to prove.

This is the Huawei Sound Joy

Like other portable speakers, the Sound Joy is committed to a young and daring aesthetic, especially if we opt for the green color; I have also been able to try the black version, and in that case it is more sober and elegant, but it is still striking. The design does not stray too far from the usual, with a woven mesh that covers the ‘drivers’, and some buttons covered in plastic; And it is that this device is resistant to water and dust, with IP67 certification, so we can take it without fear to the beach or the pool, although we should not keep it underwater.

This resistance is somewhat surprising, since in my hand it seems like a higher quality device than usual. Saving the distances, it is closer to a than a , not so much by design but by construction quality. The plastics are very noticeable to the touch and it even has very curious details, such as a lighting halo on the top, which is responsible for notifying us that the speaker can be paired via Bluetooth, and that reacts to the music we are playing. It is a curious detail that is appreciated, although I would have liked a little more variety in the light patterns it shows.

Another detail that I liked is not only design, it is also functional. I refer to the two diaphragms, each placed at one end of the apparatus, and which are adorned with the Devialet brand. It’s possible to see how they physically move to create the sound you’re listening to, and while that sounds silly, it really adds to the experience, as if you’re ‘seeing’ the music. But this has not been implemented for the sake of attention; It is part of the “Push-Push” technology, with the diaphragms placed one in front of the other to compensate the sound waves and eliminate distortions.

Design and sound quality go hand in hand.

It’s easy to see how sound quality and design haven’t taken precedence over one another. The detail of the moving diaphragms is just one of many. For example, although we are dealing with a very small speaker, just 202 mm long and weighing only 680 grams, it has managed to surprise me with its sound power.

Even leaving the volume in the first room, this Sound Joy is capable of easily covering a whole room by itself, and at full power it is possible to listen to it very far away, ideal for our parties. The key is in the 0.25l acoustic cavity, according to Huawei, which allows it to reach a volume of up to 79dBA. It’s amazing how so much sound can come out of something so small, although obviously, if we abuse this, the battery will run out very soon; It offers up to 26 hours of playback, but you will quickly use it up as soon as you increase the volume, despite the large capacity of the battery, 8800 mAh.

At least, it has a 40W fast charging system, so it won’t take long to recover the battery; just being connected for 10 minutes will charge enough to last an hour, ideal for emergencies. The USB-C connection means that we can use the same charger and cable as the mobile, so we don’t have to carry more things with us.

The last aspect that I would like to highlight about the Huawei Sound Joy is technology. Although we are not dealing with a smart speaker (although we can use the assistant of our mobile), at least it does have a very curious function, the Shake Stereo Link Up. Basically, if we have two Sound Joy we can easily pair them simply by shaking them; we will hear a sound similar to maracas and they will be associated with each other. The good thing is that, from then on, they will behave like stereo speakers, and if we put them side by side we will notice a more immersive experience.

The compatibility with other Huawei devices is also worth mentioning, since we can control playback with a Huawei watch, or connect them to our smartphone or other computer just by leaving it nearby and clicking on the pop-up window that will open.

More than it seems

The Huawei Sound Joy has managed to surprise me for several reasons. The sound power is more typical of a larger speaker, and the quality is also very good; it has worked well with both electronic and rock music, although it is evident that the bass is more enhanced thanks to the two diaphragms at the ends. Therefore, it is also good at reproducing the sound of action movies.

Of course, for the price it has, I miss more intelligent functions, such as a personal assistant that is really integrated; Right now it works the same as a ‘dumb speaker’, that is, it is the mobile that is actually executing the assistant.

All in all, it’s a stylish speaker with great sounds and fun features. And that may well be enough.

It is already available for 99 euros on the Huawei page.
