Targeted or Additional Domains, which one do I use? –

When one starts in the world of Hosting, either as an end user who is only going to manage some of their own websites or the need arises to be a reseller (Reseller) of web services, one of the things that usually generates confusion is the variety of existing options when managing a domain in a Hosting Panel.

Domains are the essence of the Internet, the correct dialogue between servers and people, translated in a way that allows machines to take us to the right place and that users know how to go to certain sites in a simple way, since it is easier to remember a url than a IP thanks to the !.

Once a domain points to the appropriate DNS servers, the next thing is to display the hosted website, which has previously been linked to the domain, and this can be done by adding the domain as targeted domain or as additional domain.

In both ways, the website will be viewed from the domain that points to the content, but What is the difference between one or the other option?.

domains additional and targeted (parked) in order to be used in a Hosting they must resolve their DNS in the Hosting or at least point the Type A record of the domain to the IP of the Hosting in order to function correctly.

Common definitions for domain states

  • Additional Domains = Additional, complement, added, complementary.
  • Targeted Domains = Parked, parked, parked.

Addon domains Parked domains Primary domain appears in address bar Yes No Apache directive used VirtualHost ServerAlias Separate registrations Yes No Separate stats Yes No Treated as a subdomain (other than URLs) Yes No Ideal for multiple domains sharing the same address No Yes

  • The Targeted Domains (Parked) are dependent on each other (generate a link).
  • The Additional Domains they are independent of each other.
  • The Subdomains they are dependent on a certain domain, either Additional or Targeted.

Targeted Domains

Are used to show the same contents as the main domain of a Hosting, hosted in the /public_html folder in a generic way (1) so that several domains display the same content.

In this way, if a user accesses from any of the .com, .net or .es domains, they will reach the web hosted on /public_html of the main domain and we will avoid that search engines like Google penalize us for considering that it is duplicate content.

The targeted domain (parked) will always show the main domain in the navigation bar, for example: http://tiendafantasia.com even if we access from .net, .es or another.

They are also often used to maintain domains that are for sale or to redirect web traffic to another domain and take advantage of their positioning.

(1) It may be the case that the web is hosted in another folder that hangs from /public_html and force the upload of the main domain to a folder through .htaccess so that it behaves transparently to the user.

You can also add other domains as pointed and redirected to another Hosting folder or to another domain.

Additional Domains

Very useful when in addition to the main domain we have other domains that we want to use for show other websites different from the main one or hosted in /public_html, for example:

Although the first domain would be the main one, and it does not need to be pointed (parked) since it is not possible to park the main domain (it already is), the following domains can behave as additional domains since they would present different contents from the main one and point each one to a different folder of the Hosting.

The additional domains do not have independent or own access to the Hosting Panel (WePanel), since only the main domain is the one that allows access to this service.

In the following video by Jordi Sala we explain how the Additional Domains.

To consider

For purposes of post managementboth the additional domains and the designated domains (parked) allow you to create email accounts with different aliases associated with each of the domains that are managed in the Hosting.

When you delete a targeted domain, any email account associated with that domain will not appear in the Hosting Panel (WePanel) interface. However, the files of these email accounts will exist. If you add the same domain again, any email account associated with that domain will appear in the Hosting Panel interface.

If you want to know if it suits you to work with subdomains you can check the article posted on our blog.
