Tesla recalls 300,000 cars in China over a software bug that can cause accidents

China forces Tesla to recall nearly 300,000 cars manufactured, and some imported, in the Asian country for a manufacturing defect related to assisted driving. It should be noted that the company is already facing a conflict in this territory due to spontaneous battery fires and failures in remote software updates.

The State Administration for Market Regulation explained that this measure is linked to a software programming defect. This is a function that users can accidentally activate causing sudden acceleration, with the risk that this entails.

All this occurs after, last May, the Chinese Ministry of Industry urged Tesla to guarantee the quality of its models made in China, because the chips used in these cars were less advanced than those of the units manufactured. in United States.

Tesla will have to update the software of these cars

The company is forced to recall all these cars in order to update its software and ensure the viability and safety of the vehicles. The issue affects 249,855 Chinese-made Model 3 and Model Y cars, and 35,665 imported Model 3 sedans.

Tesla’s sales in China account for nearly a third of the global total. However, the American brand faces increasing competition in the Asian country from traditional electric vehicle companies such as BYD Auto, but also from new firms such as Nio or Xiaopeng Motors.

In addition to the entry of new competitors, the American company is involved in another problem within the Chinese borders: mistrust of the Government. The Administration reportedly told employees at some of its offices not to park their Tesla vehicles inside government property, as there are concerns about national security over in-car cameras, Reuters reported last month.

For its part, Tesla would be trying to boost its engagement with Chinese market regulators, while strengthening its relations with the government. In fact, the firm increased the number of workers assigned to institutional relations with the Asian administration.
