The Bauhaus group will invest 69 million in two new stores in Spain that will create 280 jobs

The German group Bauhaus has decided to invest 69 million euros to open two new DIY centers in Spain, one of them in Alcorcón (Madrid) and another in Alfafar (Valencia), openings that will create a total of 280 direct jobs.

The general director of Bauhaus Spain, Bart Ginneberge, has assured that Bauhaus plans to open a DIY center in Alcorcón this summer, which entails an investment of 37 million euros.

The German manager commented that this store, located in the El Lucero business park, will be the largest DIY center in Spain, with 17,500 square meters of commercial space, and will employ 150 people directly and as many indirectly.

Likewise, Bauhaus will allocate 32 million to open a center in Alfafar, south of Valencia, an establishment that will directly employ 130 people and indirectly another as many.

However, Ginneberge has specified that this center does not yet have a scheduled opening date, since it is pending to receive the corresponding administrative licences, something that it hopes will take place “as soon as possible”.

Nine centers in Spain

Currently, Bauhaus has 9 centers in Spain, located in Barcelona, Gavà, Tarragona, Girona, Málaga, Mallorca, Valencia, Zaragoza and Madrid, so with these two openings it will have 11 establishments.

The German group currently employs some 1,100 employees in Spain, 423 of them in Catalonia.

Asked where the next openings could take place, the German manager has not ruled out expanding the presence in Catalonia – “it could be a good option”, although he has also recognized the interest of the German group in entering large cities such as Bilbao or Seville, where now it is not present.

In any case, beyond the interest in being present in “big cities” in Spain, he has stressed that there has not yet been a decision made in this regard on the new Bauhaus openings.

Although Bauhaus does not provide billing data by country, Ginneberge has assured that in 2015 the general recovery of consumption in Spain was noted and that in 2016 the group may experience a “slight growth” in sales.

However, he has qualified that during the Bauhaus crisis it did not suffer a collapse in income, since in these years many citizens chose to do home renovations themselves, for example, instead of paying a third party for it.

The German group Bauhaus, with a strong presence in Germany, currently has 270 stores spread over 18 European countries and offers products related to DIY, home, workshop and garden.

In Spain, Bauhaus competes with international groups such as Leroy Merlin, which is more established in the country.

Bauhaus has been present in Spain since 1989, when it was established in the Barcelona Free Zone, and in the last three years it has invested 135 million euros in the opening of its DIY centers in Mallorca, Valencia, Zaragoza and Madrid.
