The Catalan economy slows down its growth to 4.8%

, the Generalitat confirms the slowdown in the activity of the autonomy. If in the first quarter the expansion was 6.4%, in the second it remained at 4.8%. And thanks to the tourist boom.

The Statistics Institute of Catalonia (Idescat) published on Monday the growth data for the economy in the territory, which remains positive despite the general rise in costs. At the interannual level, the increase was 4.8%, a more moderate increase than that of the previous quarter due to the collapse of the industry, which fell at the rate of 1.5%.

“Although sales remain at a good growth rate at current prices, the increase in the cost of raw materials and supplies and the increase in prices must be taken into account. The consequence is that the results in volume of industrial added value go to be negative”, justified the entity.

Agriculture also registered a decrease of 1.6%.

The Catalan economy grows thanks to tourism

However, the engine of growth was the services sector, which advanced at a rate of 7% in the second quarter. The key was in the tourist recovery, which is already close to pre-pandemic levels after two years with activity hampered by restrictions.

The growth of 4.8% leaves the Catalan economy with an advance of five tenths less than that of the Spanish economy and eight tenths more than that of the European Union. On a quarterly basis, the increase was 1.5%, four tenths more than that of Spain (+1.1%) and nine tenths better than the continental one (+0.6%).

In addition, the expansion placed activity at practically the same level as before the pandemic. According to data from Idescat, the Gross Domestic Product is already the 98.9% it was in the last quarter of 2019.
