The five fluids you should check to keep your car in perfect condition

There are certain elements of the car that warn of the need to go through the workshop manifesting. However, many others, such as the various car fluids, require a check with a certain frequency to guarantee the good condition of the vehicle without waiting for routine inspections. | .

For this reason, Norauto, the automotive maintenance and equipment chain, emphasizes the need to specifically monitor five fluids: oil, coolant, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid, and steering fluid (the latter only in some cases).

1- Oil

The oil is responsible for lubricating and protecting the car’s engine, as well as reducing the wear caused by the friction of the different elements. In addition to changing it when indicated by the manufacturer, it is advisable to check its level with a certain periodicity. The ideal is to do it once a month and especially when you are going to make long-distance trips. If the model is old, the best option is to check it every two weeks.

The company recalls that, in addition to checking its level, the oil must also be replaced when indicated by the manufacturer itself, as well as replacing the filter and consulting the maintenance book to verify when the rest of the filters (cabin, air and fuel) should be changed. ).

It must be borne in mind that a good oil helps reduce fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and polluting gases and, of course, reduce engine wear. If it is in poor condition and is not changed, it can seriously damage the engine.

2- Coolant

It absorbs the heat generated by the engine and is responsible for removing it from the vehicle through the radiator. If it is not checked frequently and the levels are very low, it can affect the engine.

It must be checked frequently and at each maintenance check. Norauto reminds that both the oil and the coolant should be checked with the engine cold.

3- Brake fluid

As the efficiency of the brake fluid decreases, the stopping distance lengthens. Due to its importance, the company recommends checking it frequently, preferably several times a year and especially every 10,000 km.

Brake fluid should be changed every two years or as indicated by the manufacturer. It is also recommended to check with the engine cold. In this sense, it is best to check the vehicle’s maintenance manual to certify the brake fluid standard to be used.

4- Windshield wipers

Although it may seem less important, it is not. Windshield washer fluid helps to have better visibility when necessary, being especially useful on rainy days or when the glass is very dirty and the sun shines directly. You have to check it frequently so that it is not missing when it is most needed.

5- Steering fluid

This fluid should only be checked on cars that have hydraulic or electro-hydraulic power steering, I don’t feel it’s necessary on those with electric steering. Its review is recommended at least once a year.

Other liquids to check

Likewise, there are other liquids that must be taken into account, such as the additive in vehicles equipped with Anti-Particle Filters (FAP) or Adblue in cars with SCR (Selective Reduction Catalyst), whose low level causes an increase in polluting gases. Both must be checked for the proper functioning of the anti-pollution systems. It is advisable to do it annually or when indicated by the control panel. It is recommended that in the case of the FAP the review be carried out by a professional.
