The importance of unemployment benefits is very great in the unemployment benefits assistance system. These aids reach citizens who are not entitled to (or have exhausted) the contributory benefit, unemployment, so it is understood that they are people in a delicate economic situation.
These beneficiaries must be careful not to lose the right to benefits. Not only do they have to meet the benefit requirements before and during the collection period, they must also pay special attention to the times when the aid payment must be renewed, since otherwise they will lose money and remain unprotected until to resolve the situation. This is the case of unemployment benefits.
In its , the Public State Employment Service (SEPE) has explained that citizens who receive the unemployment subsidy must request the extension (if they are entitled to it) on a very specific date so as not to lose the right to collect it at any time and thus avoiding uncollected amounts.
The body advises attaching , in which it explains that the extension of the unemployment subsidy can be requested “provided that you have not exhausted the maximum duration legally provided and you maintain the requirements demanded in the application.” But, when to request this extension of the subsidy?
The SEPE makes it clear that the citizen who receives the unemployment subsidy and approaches the fulfillment of the collection period will have to request the extension “between the day following the date of exhaustion of the semester period and the fifteen days following the expiration date of the payment period of the last monthly payment”, indicating that this date usually occurs between the 10th and 15th of each month.
If these deadlines are met and the extension is requested within the stipulated time, the citizen will not notice changes in the collection of the unemployment subsidy, since in the following month they will receive the same as in the previous one.
What happens if I do not renew the unemployment subsidy?
Everything changes if the citizen does not respect the subsidy renewal deadlines. The SEPE explains that, once the established period has elapsed, the citizen will only be entitled to the benefit once he requests it, causing effects from the day he submits the request for that subsidy that he was previously collecting.
When that happens, the citizen will lose money, since they will give up part of the benefit. The SEPE explains that in these cases days of duration that are not recovered are discounted: “As many days as have passed from the day following the exhaustion of the semester period to the date of application, both inclusive”.
In which cases you can request the extension of the unemployment subsidy
The subsidy is paid for six-month periods and, in the event that the duration is greater than those six months, it will force the citizen to request the extension of the subsidy. This will only occur when the beneficiary has contributed for at least six months as unemployment and has family responsibilities.
In these cases, the maximum period for collecting the unemployment subsidy will be 21 months and “the right will be recognized for six months, and it can be extended for periods of six months until its final duration.”
How to request the extension of the unemployment subsidy
The citizen has two options to request the extension of the unemployment subsidy. The alternative chosen depends on the income of the family unit:
-If the income of the family unit divided between the number of members did not exceed 75% of the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI) in any month, you can do so at the SEPE Electronic Office, in the procedure ‘Recognition of the extension of subsidies’, . -If in any month the income limit requirement is exceeded or simply none of these access methods are available, the procedure can be carried out in one of the SEPE offices, in person, although for this it is essential to make an appointment (You can check how to request it both at the SEPE Electronic Office and by phone).
