These are the cheapest options to heat a house with the arrival of the cold, according to the OCU

The cold season is approaching Spain and with it the months where a good heating system is vital to protect yourself from low temperatures. In addition, in full , choosing the cheapest option can lead to significant help for families’ pockets. Therefore, the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) with the cheapest systems.

Taking as a reference a 90 square meter house in a cold climatic region (central peninsular), the OCU has carried out a study with the most common technologies (electric radiators, stove, gas boiler, diesel boiler, heat pump and electric accumulators). An analysis that has broken down the price of each device, to place the average cost in Spain at 600 euros per year, which is considered expensive.

Therefore, choosing the best option since in the long run it can lead to significant savings and more so in times when the energy bill does not stop increasing. Of course, the OCU makes it clear that all technologies have their advantages and disadvantages because there are homes that, due to their characteristics, cannot adapt to a certain device.

Stoves, cheaper and more sustainable

However, already entering the most economical, in the first place the institution highlights the pallet stoves or boilers. The most sustainable option, since they take advantage of the organic waste from pruning or olive pits, the former distribute hot air while the latter heat a water circuit.

In any case, the average cost of both is 313 euros per year, which leaves it as the cheapest option. Of course, for this, it must be taken into account that a large house must be available to store the waste, as well as constant maintenance.

The heat pump is imposed for its price but also for the ease of heating and cooling as needed

After this, the other most profitable option is to have a heat pump. With availability of heating in winter and cooling in summer, the great disadvantage of these systems is that they must have an external hole, since they exchange energy with the outside to heat or cool.

With an average cost of 339 euros per year (although they require a high initial investment), they are very efficient and can support other heating systems.

60% of gas boilers should be replaced due to the age that their regular use entails

Already far from these two options are the rest, although the OCU highlights gas heating since it is the most common in Spain (35% of homes are heated this way). With an annual cost of 468 euros, these devices are very efficient and provide good comfort. Likewise, its disadvantages include the fact that the installation costs are very high, they require access to the piped gas supply and up to 60% are outdated, so their replacement is recommended.

Lastly, average costs increase with diesel boilers (653 euros), electric accumulators (822 euros) and conventional electric radiators (934 euros). In any case, the OCU through which the data of each dwelling can be entered to know the real efficiency of its system and which one is the most suitable.
