This is the Andalusian evacuation plan in case a tsunami hit southern Spain

Spain has a real threat of suffering a tsunami at some point in history that would devastate part of its coasts. Especially in the south of the peninsula, this statement by a CSIC has put all institutions on alert. To such an extent that the Government, together with the Junta de Andalucía, have already sounded out a plan in case such a phenomenon were to occur.

Risk analysis, operation, information to the population and alert system are some of the basic points of the , that the government authorities have on the Spanish coasts and is included in the same Official State Gazette (BOE).

More specifically on western Andalusia (Huelva and Cádiz), but also with the possibility of carrying it out in eastern Andalusia, Murcia, the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Galicia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands and Ceuta and Melilla, where there are also possibilities that it could be noticed such a phenomenon, the objective is to be prevented before an event as terrifying as this.

And it is that according to various studies, confirmed by the CSIC, the Averroes fault, over the Alborrán Sea, in its tectonic movement could trigger waves of up to six meters high that would reach the southern peninsula in half an hour (between 21 and 35 minutes). ). That is why this project to have everything ready in order to evacuate the population and suffer as little damage as possible.

Evacuation, the main thing

“It was an obligation, but beyond the legal imperative, this plan is essential in a country like Spain, which has some 7,660 kilometers of coastline where 58% of the population resides,” the minister said last June. of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in the presentation of the plan.

A design that is already based on the National Tsunami Warning System (SINAM). A method that feeds on different geographical organization charts to detect the generation of tidal waves early, which would issue a warning signal to the population in case of serious risk to order all defense preparations.

The plan includes how to alert the population in case of false security prior to the first wave that triggers the tsunami

From early evacuation to the secondary effects that it would generate, due to the dragging force of the waves, the plan also contemplates the provision of resources and means for intervention or how to act in the face of false security in the drop in sea level, prior to the first wave Everything from the collaboration of the different institutions, to “guarantee that the majority of the population is reached in the shortest possible time”.

With the memory of the Lorca earthquake in 2011 or the tidal wave that devastated Cádiz in 1755, this first plan focuses on Andalusia but contains the possibility of extending the alert to the rest of the Spanish coast. “It is about establishing the necessary coordination between all the administrations and includes state support mechanisms for autonomous plans,” remarks the Government in an idea that sounds like a movie but could happen at some point in history.
