What kind of brown are you? Tricks to tan

There is a general obsession with getting tanned in summer without taking into account the type of skin of each one, nor the risks that exposure to the sun entails without any type of protection. Getting tanned and protecting our skin are not incompatible things and here we explain how to do it.

Discover your skin type!

There are six phototypes, or skin types. Depending on yours, you should use a cream with a sun protection factor (SPF) or another.

Phototype I:

Also called Celtic. It’s typical of red-haired people, who are very, very pale-skinned, freckled, and generally have light-colored eyes.

They tend to be very sensitive to the sun and it is practically impossible for them to tan. They tend to burn very easily, after 12 minutes of exposure, and show signs of aging from a very young age. They can also develop benign tumors and thickening of the skin.

These people are recommended to use an SPF between 80 and 100.

Phototype II:

Germanic call. It is similar to the previous one, although slightly less sensitive. People with this phototype are also white-skinned and light-eyed, or brown in some cases. It is not easy for them to take color either and they burn after 15 minutes of exposure.

These people are recommended to use an SPF between 50 and 80.

Phototype III

Typical of the Caucasian race. These people tolerate the sun better, so they do tan, although sometimes they have more whitish spots on the skin. They can burn, after 18 minutes of exposure. They have oily, fair skin and dark eyes.

These people are recommended to use an SPF between 30 and 50.

Phototype IV:

Typical of the Mediterranean race. They are people with dark skin, hair and eyes. They brown quickly and don’t usually burn. When this happens, the skin turns purple, not red as in the previous cases, and for a short time. They can also develop spots.

These people are recommended to use an SPF between 20 and 30.

Phototype V:

Typical of Amerindian or mestizo races. They have very dark skin, eyes and hair. They acquire a very intense tan with great ease and hardly ever burn.

These people are recommended to use an SPF between 25 and 20.

Phototype VI:

Own of the black race. They are people who do not burn, since they have highly pigmented skin. Even so, they must be protected because radiation produces very harmful effects.

These people are recommended to use an SPF of 15.

Get tanned safely!

Now that you know your skin type, these three tips will help you stimulate melanin in a healthy way and prolong the results:

1. Take vegetables that are red, orange, yellow or dark green, since they are high in beta-carotene. Spinach, carrots, and bell peppers are a good example.

2. Don’t wait for summer to catch up with you! Prepare your skin the previous months, exfoliating it once a week. This way you will achieve a more beautiful and lasting tone.

3. There are oral tanning stimulator capsules. Ideally, start taking them a month before sun exposure.

And remember to hydrate your skin with aloe vera to maintain your hard-earned color! What are you waiting for to go to the pool or the beach?
