Attention, the new electricity bill only affects 11 million consumers: how to know if you are one of them

The new electricity bill, which came into force on June 1, is the talk of all conversations. And the jokes about ironing to save money are already counted in pairs. However, this change only affects consumers who are covered by the regulated market.

Who is affected by the new electricity bill?

Red Eléctrica de España (REE) explains that the new rate only directly affects all those consumers covered by the Voluntary Price for Small Consumers (PVPC). Currently, the entity calculates that there are around 29 million domestic consumers in Spain (94% of all electricity supply contracts), of which around 11 million are covered by the PVPC.

How can I know if I am covered by the PVPC?

Red Eléctrica de España says that the ‘Contract data’ section of the electricity bill is where you indicate if you are covered by this PVPC modality. “If it does not appear, you are not covered by this tariff modality”, explains REE. Thus, it will not be affected by the new time slots

How is the new electricity bill?

REE clarifies that the new electricity bill will continue to contain the same terms as before, but with some variations in the format. Those sections are:

– Fixed term: it is the contracted power, that is, at the maximum amount of instantaneous consumption without the leads jumping. This concept is always the same and applies the same, whether you consume or not.

– Variable term: its value will depend on when and how much is consumed. This is where the most important changes have taken place, since a series of sections with more or less expensive electricity prices have been established.

– Corresponding taxes

How to save more on the electricity bill?

The only way to save on the electricity bill is to contract less power, which would allow you to connect fewer appliances at the same time, and consume in the sections where electricity is cheaper.

– Valley time. The cheapest. This section is between 00:00 and 8:00, when there is less demand, as well as during the 24 hours of the weekend.

– Plain time. The average rate. Its section corresponds between 8:00 and 10:00, 14:00 and 18:00 and 22:00 and 00:00.

– Rush hour. The strip with the highest cost. Its hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

However, it should be remembered that these brackets do not indicate the price of electricity, since it is determined according to a daily auction. Thus, REE explains that the final price of electricity is obtained as follows:

This price is based on the result of the daily energy market, operated by the Iberian Electricity Market Operator (OMIE), and where, on the one hand, the sales offers of the generators for each hour of the day and , on the other, the purchase offers by the marketers. The price resulting from this matching for each hour of the day (known as the pool price) is the main component of the PVPC, to which adjustment services are added, as well as payments for tolls, charges and other regulated costs whose impact will vary depending on of the time period in which the consumption is made (peak, flat or valley).
