With what types of aesthetic treatments can I sunbathe and with which not? The expert answers

Temperatures rise and summer is getting closer. We know that the sun is harmful to the skin, which can raise doubts when undergoing medical treatments and cosmetic surgery on these dates. Dr. Gema Pérez Sevilla, maxillofacial surgeon and expert in facial aesthetic medicine, solves all doubts about sunbathing before and after a treatment.

The treatments that are not recommended to carry out with the rise in temperatures

All those that involve skin replacement, for example, CO2 laser Resurfacing, pigmentary laser and deep peels. All of them leave the skin very exposed and, in contact with the sun, spots would appear. It is also not advisable to carry out treatments that involve very exposed scars on the face, such as resections of fibroids or superficial skin lesions.

Treatments that can be performed, but with precautions

In general, it is possible to perform aesthetic medicine surgeries and treatments in the summer months as long as two premises are taken into account:

-You cannot sunbathe or be subjected to high temperatures on the day of treatment/surgery. Any procedure involves inflammation and high temperatures favor inflammation, which would extend the recovery time.

-If the procedure causes a bruise, it should not be exposed to the sun, to avoid leaving a mark.

surgeries and sun

After facial surgery you should not sunbathe in the first 15 days. After that time, although it would be advisable to avoid it (at least between 3-6 months), exposures with very high protection could be carried out, reapplying every two hours and choosing to use stick protection, which sticks more to the skin, it is more sweat resistant and easier to apply.

Depending on the surgery, more precautions must be taken, for example, two areas highly exposed to the sun would be the nose and lips. After a rhinoplasty, the skin is very traumatized, and it is also thinner skin, so very high sun protection should be avoided or used, together with physical protection (caps, wide-brimmed hats…). After the lip lift laser there is a small scar under the nose, which should be completely protected.

Other less traumatic surgeries are, for example, a lower blepharoplasty. If the laser has not been used and there is no external scar, you could sunbathe after a week, always with protection.

In the case of a facelift, the scars are hidden behind the ears, but in an exhibition on the beach, do not trust them and we recommend protecting them with sunscreen and using a scarf as a headband to cover them perfectly.

Aesthetic and sun treatments

Botox: you can’t sunbathe the first day, after that, unless there are bruises, with protection, there’s no problem. If there are bruises, avoid taking it or cover it completely.

Fillers with hyaluronic acid: you have to be more careful because it is common for there to be inflammation during the first 3-4 days (in Botox there is usually only the first few hours), and there is also a greater risk of bruising. We do not recommend exposing yourself to the sun for 3-4 days to prevent the skin temperature from rising, activating inflammation. From the 4th day, intermittent exposures could be made, preventing the skin temperature from rising.

Facial mesotherapy: it does not require specific care, but if bruises appear, we recommend using creams that help to reabsorb them, and, of course, high sun protection.

Treatments around the eyes: you have to protect that skin very well afterwards because it is thinner and more sensitive. In addition to using specific sun protection, we recommend large sunglasses that cover the entire area.
