A list of 12 great Rioja wines (among them is the best in the world)

The Rioja Denomination of Origin was present at several of the events that were part of the New York Wine Experience, one of the most anticipated events by wine and gastronomy fans from all over the country and organized by the prestigious Wine Spectator magazine. Among them, it sponsored a lunch where 12 great Riojas were enjoyed, including Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010, which was chosen as the best wine of 2021 by the publication.

Rioja sponsored one of the fair’s exclusive lunches, an activity that brought together 700 consumers and which, due to capacity reasons, had a waiting list of another 600 people. At lunch, a representation of wines from the region selected by the magazine (taking into account the ratings and evaluations of the editors themselves) served to harmonize a menu inspired by Spanish cuisine.

The 12 selected wines ‘Wine Spectator’

1. Baron de Chirel 2016 of the Heirs of the Marquis of Riscal

2. Muga Tower 2016 by Muga

3. Gaudium 2016 by Marquis of Cáceres

4. 904 Gran Reserva 2010 from La Rioja Alta

5. Palacios Remondo Traditional Vineyards Property 2015

6. Imperial Gran Reserva 2015 from CVNE

7. Valserrano Blanco 2015 from La Marquesa

The wineries represented were very satisfied with the organization of the event, congratulating how the initiative added a lot of value and generated a very powerful image of Rioja as a whole. In addition, aside from the food, an event held by the magazine in another of the fair’s halls had different protagonists from Rioja, since the Marqués de Murrieta winery, in the hands of its owner, Vicente Cebrián, received the award for best wine of the world for its Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010.

In recent weeks, in addition to the recognition of Marqués de Murrieta by Wine Spectator, we found that the ranking of Wine and Spirits highlighted 3 Rioja wineries in the top positions of the list of the Top 100 in the world. In addition, Jesús Martinez Bujanda, a Riojan winemaker based in Washington, was awarded as one of the young promises of the sector in the ‘Top 40 Under 40 Tastemakers of 2021’ ranking of the prestigious Wine Enthusiast magazine.
