Barcelona, the fourth most prepared city in the world to face the technological future

Barcelona is the fourth city in the world, after Singapore, London and Shanghai, most prepared to face the technological future, and continues, for the third consecutive year, among the 25 most competitive cities in the world.

This is stated in the Barcelona 2018 Observatory Report, prepared by the City Council and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce with the different world rankings of cities made by various international institutions and which this year incorporates the Business Climate of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area.

According to this report, in 2018, Barcelona also ranked fourth in the world as the most attractive city to work abroad and as the third preferred city in Europe -behind London and Berlin- to locate a start-up.

The report highlights that Barcelona was ranked fifth in Europe in 2018 in scientific production -18th in the world-, with employment for more than 800,000 people -throughout Catalonia- dedicated to the field of science and technology.

The Catalan capital also stands out as the first in smart homes, in digitization of culture and tourism, and in smart health care, according to a new indicator prepared by PWC, which has been included for the first year in the new edition of the Observatory’s report Barcelona 2018, which analyzes the main economic, social and business indicators in the cities of Europe and the world.

The Deputy Mayor for Economy and Labor, Digital City and International Relations, Gerardo Pisarello, highlighted “that Barcelona enters the ranking of world cities most prepared to face the technological future is not by chance but the result of a long-standing collective effort of university and research centers, the local productive fabric and a municipal administration committed to innovation”.

According to the report, the city maintains a good economic and business position in the European and global contexts

Pisarello took the opportunity to challenge “those who paint a biased image of Barcelona” to “take note of this report because our city is attractive in the eyes of the world and continues to attract talent and productive investment”.

According to the report, the city maintains a good economic and business position in the European and global contexts, and continues for the third consecutive year among the 25 most competitive urban areas in the world, occupying 24th place in the Global Power City Index 2018 ranking of the Mori Memorial Foundation.

It is also among the top 15 cities in the world with the best reputation for the fifth consecutive year in the City Receive Track report and is fifth in the world according to Resonance Consultancy’s World’s Best Cities 2019, which values the quality and reputation of the city from different perspectives incorporating data from digital channels.

Barcelona maintains international investment confidence, as shown by the fact that it remained among the top ten urban areas in the world in attracting foreign investment projects in 2017, according to KPMG.

The most attractive city to work

In 2018, Barcelona ranked as the fourth most attractive city in the world to work abroad according to The Boston Consulting Group’s Decoding Global Talent Report 2018, behind only London, New York and Berlin. In addition, the city closed 2017 as the first in the world to organize international congresses, according to the ICCA, and its airport continues to be the 7th in Europe, with more than 47 million passengers.
