Consum accelerates in franchises: it increases its sales to Charter by 12.9% and adds 48 new stores

The Valencian supermarket cooperative has seen how since the pandemic the network of its Charter franchised brand has not stopped growing and attracting entrepreneurs. As published by the magazine elEconomista Comunitat Valenciana, after opening 48 new supermarkets, distributed throughout Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Castile-La Mancha and the Region of Murcia.

A development that has allowed , to reach 444 million euros, a figure that represents 53.4 million euros more than forecast at the beginning of the year.

The expansion of the Charter franchise has been carried out in the same autonomous communities as in recent years, mainly in Catalonia and the Valencian Community, with 22 and 19 openings, respectively. Charter has added more than 14,200 square meters of surface to its commercial network.

The Consum franchise has also opened 5 establishments in Castilla-La Mancha and 2 in the Region of Murcia.

Franchisee profile

As the cooperative explains, of the openings in 2021, almost 80% have been from franchisees who already had a store and have decided to invest in a new franchise. New franchisees have also been registered from other sectors that have been greatly affected by the pandemic, such as hospitality.

From the Valencian cooperative they explain that being a Consum franchisee does not imply the payment of fees or royalties for the services and the brand, since the associated trade only has to assume the payment of the merchandise to the distribution chain.

With these new supermarkets, the number of workers hired by Consum franchisees has increased by 19% compared to 2020, to 2,712 workers.

Forecasts for 2022

Looking ahead to 2022, the forecasts for the Charter franchise are to continue with the same growth rate as in 2021, at a rate of about 40 openings per year, mainly in the Valencian Community and Catalonia, and, to a lesser extent, in Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Region of Murcia. In terms of sales, Consum’s sales to Charter are expected to increase to 481.3 million euros, a figure that would represent a growth of 8.4% compared to 2021.

For now, the Consum franchise continues with its expansion and opens the 2022 financial year with two new openings in Manresa (Barcelona) and Valencia, with which it reaches 374 charters in Spain.

With the Charter franchise, Consum provides services in small towns and urban neighborhoods that do not have enough population to set up a large supermarket, but that need a good facility for their daily purchases.
