Digital Music Distribution Course #2. The record companies – .com

In the second class of the digital music distribution course we will see the figure of the record companies and the important role they play in all this music distribution.

We’ve all heard of record labels, record houses, or record labels, but few really understand their role and how they intervene in an artist’s career.

Understanding their definition, the types and departments that make them up will position us one step ahead when it comes to negotiating with them or simply to develop ourselves in the sector. As soon as our music is public, we will start to hear terms like A&R, licensing, liaison department, or artistic development.

We see which are the main multinationals, their divisions and how we can apply all this information from now on. Let’s start!

You see it! Having clear the fundamental scheme of the record companies and the role they play in all this music, we are in a position to assess whether we are interested in negotiating with them or not and, on the other hand, we will understand much better how self-publishing platforms work with which we will distribute our songs independently.

Warner Music Group, Sony Music and Universal Music Group are the three large multinationals that cover almost all international music. These companies share the cake leaving the “crumbs” to some independent artists. This reality should not despair us because there are divisions that are traditional labels absorbed by the previous ones.

These labels or divisions are presented as a cell specialized in specific genres and that take care of their artists to get the most out of their works. This is why we should consider offering our work to a label with which we fit. Joining our forces we will go further.

Once again, this thing about the labels and record companies is something that we have to take into account without it being our main objective. It is that we publish our works and that when we acquire some impact in our community, we know how to put it on our part to find a record company.

As a task, you must investigate the labels closest to your music, collect all the information you can, such as which artists they carry, what services they offer, what large multinational they belong to, and what types of contracts they offer.

As always, if you have any doubt or question, you can send it through the support form of the subscriber intranet. See you in the next lesson! 🙂
