Extremadura becomes a place of reference for the new green and digital industry

The president of the Junta de Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, has stated that the future Iberian Center for Research in Energy and Energy Storage, which will be located in Cáceres, marks the beginning of a new time in which Extremadura will have a new opportunity to become a benchmark for the new green and digital industry.

Fernández Vara thanked the Governments of Spain and Portugal for their commitment to Extremadura, during the appearance before the media that he made together with the Minister of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain, Diana Morant; and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, Elvira Fortunato.

The president of the Extremaduran Executive has explained that the future Iberian Center for Research and Energy Storage will be launched at the end of next year, because the bidding processes for the project have already begun. Fernandez Vara stressed that this new economy research center represents a new era for the region, a new opportunity to become a benchmark for the new green and digital industry.

The Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, pointed out during her speech at the appearance that, in the current legislature, the central government has transferred 158 million euros to Extremadura for the research centers of the Autonomous Community, more than double budgets allocated to these entities in previous governments. In addition, she has indicated that the Ministry has launched new instruments of new instruments of collaboration and cooperation. These are complementary plans that involve research centers from all over the country “working together to face all the challenges that Spain currently faces”.

At this moment there are three in progress: Biodiversity, Biotechnology applied to health; and Renewable Energies and Green Nitrogen. 32.3 million euros will be invested in these three challenges.

Morant explained that the future Iberian Center for Energy Research and Storage is part of the actions planned in the Complementary Plan for Renewable Energy and Hydrogen. He is also part of the strong commitment and decision of the Government of Spain and the Government of Portugal in energy autonomy, based on renewable energy.

The two governments intend to lead this energy transition and, for this, they are going to allocate 40 percent of the funds from the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Framework, which is about 28,000 million euros. This green transition will generate economic opportunities and more than 500,000 jobs

The future Iberian Center for Research and Energy Storage will involve an investment of 74 million euros and will generate 150 jobs for researchers and technicians.

For her part, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, Elvira Fortunato, highlighted the historical nature of the creation of this new center, “we are making history in Extremadura, in Spain, in Portugal, in Europe and in the world”. Fortunato has indicated that his country is making a considerable effort in the implementation of clean and renewable energies and has also spoken during his speech, of this necessary collaboration in the field of research and technology that Spain has been developing with Portugal, since the Portuguese city of Braga has been home to the Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory for more than a decade. The minister stressed that “these two centres, the one in Braga and the one in Cáceres, will become a unique initiative in the world”.
