Facebook login in WordPress – .com

In this tutorial we are going to see how we can integrate the login and registration with Facebook in WordPress.

Social login in WordPress

The idea of the social login is as simple as being able to identify ourselves, even register, in an environment with the credentials of one of our social profiles, be it with Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Well, this time we are going to see how we can offer users of our site the possibility of logging in or registering with the Facebook username and password in WordPress. There are several plugins that will help us in this aspect, we will use one in particular that works quite well and with which we will be able to include a login and register button in the wp-login.php login page.

The steps are simple, we will have to make some adjustments in Facebook and others in WordPress. In the Facebook part, we are going to obtain the application ID and associate the web domain where we are going to implement the social login, in addition to making some other adjustments. For its part in WordPress we will install and configure the plugin to connect using Facebook and we will relate it to this application. You will see that it is quite easy to do, let’s start!

Get the application identifier

The first thing we will have to do is obtain the identifier of our Facebook application to be able to associate it later in the plugin that we will install in WordPress.

To do this, you will have to follow some specific steps, and of course have the application created and published previously. If you need to create your own, on the page you will find all the necessary information.

Well, it is on this website where we will have to log in to obtain the ID, and prepare some settings so that everything can work. So we are going to go to , and we will identify ourselves from the “Enter” option on the top menu.

Once we log in, we have to go to “My applications” and choose the application we want to use. As we can see from this same menu we could also create or add one.

The control panel of the application opens from where we can consult statistics, make basic and advanced settings, and some other procedures. Also in the upper part we will locate what we are looking for.

The ID is the number that appears next to the text “Application identifier” that we see in the image. As you can imagine, this identifier is unique, each one will have their own, in this case it is a test ID.

Well, once we have it, we simply click on the ID, and it will be copied to the clipboard. We can temporarily paste it somewhere if we prefer since before going to the last step we will have to make some more adjustments.

Settings in the Facebook application

To make these adjustments we will go to the menu on the left, “Settings / Basic information”. Here we are going to associate our domain to grant permissions and be able to connect to the application from said website using the Facebook API.

In this section there are several fields, some are required and others are optional. Let’s look at each of them:

  • Application identifier: The number that uniquely identifies a Facebook application. It is used in API calls.
  • Application secret key: It is used in some login processes in order to ensure that only people with sufficient permissions use the application. If it is compromised for any reason, it should be restored as soon as possible.
  • Display name: The name of the application that will be displayed among other sites in the “My applications” menu.
  • Namespace: The real name if you want to use it.
  • Application domains: Domain or domains in which this application will be used, either to connect or for what we need.
  • Contact E-Mail: An email in which we can receive relevant information about the application.
  • Privacy Policy URL: The full URL of our Privacy Policy page.
  • Terms of Service URL: Full URL of the Terms of Service page if needed.
  • App icon: Application icon in 1024x1024px format.
  • Category: The category in which this app can be included.
  • Commercial use: Here we will have to select the reason why the application uses Facebook data or tools.

When entering this option we will find that some fields are already filled in. We will only have to fill in the domain/domains of the application, the URL to the privacy policy and the contact email, the rest is optional.

By filling in this information and clicking on “Save changes”, Facebook will ask us to confirm the password of our profile to make sure that we really want to make these changes and grant access permissions to the application to those domains. Well now that we have all this ready, we are going to install and configure the plugin in WordPress, come on, there is only one more step left.

Install and configure plugin in WordPress

With the application ID and the settings made in Facebook, we are ready to install the plugin that will serve as a bridge between WordPress and Facebook.

The plugin that we are going to use is called WP Facebook Login for WordPress, it is in the , and it is developed by Damian Logghe. Wp Facebook Login for WordPress offers us a simple solution to be able to connect to WordPress using Facebook.

By activating the plugin, users will have the possibility to access with their Facebook account, and they will also be able to eliminate this association if they wish from their WordPress profile. Finally, if we want them to be able to register on our site, we will have to make sure to check the option “Anyone can register” in the “Settings / General” menu.

And that’s it! We’re done. If you want to implement it, you just have to follow these steps. As you can see, it is very easy to offer the two possibilities of login and registration on our site, in fact we recommend that you keep both so that everyone can choose the one they prefer :).
