fnac is a reference brand in the field of cultural and entertainment products. This French chain of large format stores specializes in books, music and consumer electronics. In Spain it has 24 stores spread over 12 provinces, its flagship (and the first to open) being the 7-storey store located in the emblematic Plaza de Callao in Madrid. and which opened in 1993. Its eCommerce side, Fnac Online, has an extensive product catalog that includes physical books and eBooks, music, movies, electronics and household appliances, stationery, toys and even bodybuilding equipment.

Fnac online: a lot of catalog, too many categories, tiny print

Fnac online, at first sight, It has a very classic look. Prestashop breathes through all its pores and is very reminiscent of Amazon, but the Amazon of 5 years ago. It draws attention and with a font size that is too small that makes it difficult to see. It is the result of trying to fit no less than 15 menu categories in a single horizontal line. This is solved by grouping categories or putting the menu vertically on one side.

Three quarters of the same happens with the products featured on the Fnac online home page: images and font too small, very much in the style of Prestashop, but without tuning. And exactly the same happens with the product sheets. I swear I had to check that I didn’t have the browser zoom below 100% without realizing it. Not unreadable to a person with 20/20 vision, but certainly it is not intended at all for forty-somethings with presbyopiathat we are probably your main potential customers.

Fnac online has what it takes, but It is far from what a file of a reference online store should be in 2016. In many cases only an image of the product appears. It is not possible to zoom in on specific details of a photo (something that is necessary in electronics in many cases). The information and technical specifications are quite complete, but hard to read. For example, we look at specifications of Windows 10 laptops and it turns out that the information about the operating system (obviously provided directly by Microsoft) is in a much more dynamic, readable and accessible format than the information about the product itself.

Fnac online has some interesting aspects: it is obviously in the process of being converted to a marketplace, since tIt has integrated stores of other brands (these do take care of the format) within their own online store (GoPro, Apple, Microsoft Surface, Philips, Xbox and Intel). Also, you can add products to a comparator (very interesting in the case of electronics) and an icon of an assistant that is nothing more than a “call back” button (you leave your number and they call you) which no longer makes much sense in the days of flat voice rates. In addition, this serves as an excuse for not putting a customer service phone number in a visible place (the one there is from the Fnac Pro business area)

Shipments are free for purchases over 39 euros. There is also the option of collecting the order in store, which is always free, in addition to the return costs.

Fnac online offers in the footer menu access to the online magazine Cultura Fnac, with contents of literary criticism, cultural information and cultural programming of all the Fnac stores in Spain. This one is much more readable than the mother page.
