What is a Focus Group

A Focus Group on UX It consists of an informal meeting, with qualified or experienced users, with the aim of obtaining their sensations, attitudes and ideas through their opinions about the website or app we are working on.

It is one that will give us qualitative data. It helps us to identify and solve possible errors and problems in the digital product.

When to conduct a Focus Group

  • In the initial phases of a project, for example, when we still only have the Wireframes on paper and we need to be proactive with the possible errors of the digital product that we are designing.
  • When we are going to face a redesign of an existing product and we want to obtain opinions to gather information.
  • When we want to detect future needs of the users who use the digital product.

How to make a Focus Group

Before launching into the meeting with the expert users, it is necessary to plan the Focus Group:

1. Define the objectives of the test

It is necessary to know what the objectives of the project are and to determine What are the objectives of the Focus Group? so that later the script used by the moderator is aligned with the defined objectives.

2. Choose the participants well

The audience to which the object of observation of the session is directed must be clear. Users must be qualified and have previous experience. They are “experts” in the matter.

3. Definition of scenarios and contexts

All the questions or topics to be discussed, which the moderator of the session will expose to the participants, must be perfectly contextualized. The situations in which the users of the website or application may find themselves at the time of performing any task must be represented as accurately as possible.

4. Support with which the test will be carried out

The type of support with which the test will be carried out must be specified. Depending on whether it is a paper Wireframe, a prototype with animations or a digital product already uploaded to production, the moderator can raise some questions and others.

5. Registration system

There are different ways to collect the opinions of the experts participating in the session. Field notes, video, audio, etc…

It is helpful to have a blackboard where you can write down the different problems detected by the participants and the solutions proposed by each of them until a consensus is reached.

After the session, All the records obtained in the Focus Group must be analyzed and a report generated with the observations and recommendations for improvement for the digital product.
