Ford Mustang Mach-E, the experience with a high-performance electric SUV

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a new experience in the fast-changing world of the automotive industry. It inherits the name of the legendary sports car transformed into a taller and wider SUV, but above all 100% battery electric. It offers up to 610 km of autonomy, rear or four-wheel drive and a starting price of 63,000 euros.

It can be said, in some way, that the new Mustang takes the Tesla concept for its interior and the driving position. It has a small instrument panel, with little information, focused mainly on its autonomy and maximum speed. And then a large screen, 15.5 inches, located vertically and of the highest quality. In this sense, if it can be compared with the models of the Californian brand, as it can also be associated with the concept of a 100% electric SUV type vehicle, with the Model X.

But from there, there is a big difference between the two brands, Tesla has only been making cars for less than 20 years, it is an almost new market for Elon Musk’s company. In the case of Ford, you can almost say that they invented the automobile. In reality, what they invented was the mass production of cars, at the beginning of the 20th century, with the Ford Model T. That is to say, 115 years manufacturing cars in series.

The new Mustang Mach-E is a vehicle with a large body, five seats and a large trunk, but above all with electrical mechanics. Nothing to do with its predecessor, from which it only takes its name. But it retains a basic concept that is in the DNA of the original Mustang, that of the accessible sports car. In this case based on a large, electric SUV, but also a reasonably priced model for everything it offers. The version of access to the range is available from 63,000 euros.

A new age

The Mustang Mach-E represents the beginning of a new electrified era for Ford. It is the first of 17 electrified vehicles that the brand will launch in Europe in the coming years. In addition, it offers an even sportier version, the Mach-e GT, which offers a power of 487 horses, which allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 in just 3.7 seconds. It is therefore the maximum exponent of the new Mustang.

It is very well made, it is not a luxurious car but it is very spacious and comfortable.

But let’s talk about the Mustang Mach-E that we have tested on all kinds of roads where we have been able to verify that it represents the concept of the electric car that can be used for everything. It is not only a city car, because due to its dimensions it is not particularly suitable for it, but it is also a road vehicle.

An electric model to do many kilometers comfortably and with the additional virtue of being zero emissions. You can even ride on forest tracks, especially in this 4×4 version, although with care, because its ground clearance is only 15 centimeters. Come on, it’s an SUV by its exterior appearance, but it’s not a campero.

The range of the Ford Mustang is very simple since it only has two types of motorization, with 269 or 351 horses and also two types of battery. These versions without analyzing the top of the range, the most exclusive such as the GT. With this it also has two traction systems: the versions with a single engine are rear-wheel drive, while the variants with two engines have four-wheel drive. The combination of the rear propulsion with the largest battery is the one that provides the maximum approved autonomy, which reaches up to 610 kilometers.

In its exterior appearance, it takes up details of the original Mustang with its falling roof line, which gives a certain family air despite the fact that this model is a four-door. Its front is very sharp and its long hood is also reminiscent of the sports car, where its V8 engine is accommodated. In this case there is room for a small trunk of another 81 liters along with some electrical management systems.

Very striking

Its interior is very striking because in the driving position we find two very different screens. The instrument panel, in front of the steering wheel, is a rather narrow and small screen, with the most important data necessary for driving, including the navigation instructions. And to complete the information for the driver we have a 15.5-inch touch screen oriented vertically.

The 4X version of the Mach E has four-wheel drive, which provides safety.

A screen that allows a very intuitive use, with which it is easy to get used to its use. As for the rest of the interior, what we find is a well-finished vehicle, with robust materials, but without excesses. It is not a car that seeks to be luxurious. Its gear lever is round. In it we only find the positions forward, reverse, neutral and parking. Logically, there are no gear changes.

The emblematic anagram of the Mustang is maintained in this new model of the electric SUV type.

As far as its interior habitability is concerned, it is a very spacious car. It offers five generous seats in its passenger compartment and a 402-litre capacity trunk at the rear, to which are added the other 81 liters at the front. It is a perfect space to store wet things, as it has a plug to clean it with water and empty it. The almost 500 liters of capacity that allow to make long trips, depending on the recharge, and also gives options for a more adventurous life.

Its batteries are located on the floor of the vehicle, so its center of gravity is very low. It has a slightly higher ground clearance than a car, only 15 centimeters. It is not a very tall car and therefore its dynamic behavior is very good, even in the worst circumstances, with very twisty roads, due to the absence of rocking. The suspensions are not too firm, which favors comfort without compromising its stability.

It is a large car, it measures 4.71 meters, and it is taller than a conventional car, but the feeling that it transmits to its driver is that he is driving a small and very manageable car. It almost looks more like a compact, like the Focus, than a larger one.

driving modes

It offers three different driving modes, with a slightly strange name. These are Whisper, Active and Untamed, which we could define as Eco, Normal and Sport. Each of them offers a configuration of the steering and the responsiveness of the vehicle, also combined with the different sensory experience. But above all it changes the capacity of regenerative braking. The biggest of all is achieved in Whisper mode, the Echo.

A highlight of the new Mustang is its maximum connectivity. In fact, the car is only opened and closed using our mobile. Although it allows the possibility of opening the vehicle by means of a code, for which you have to touch the door post and then we will have to dial said personal code. All connectivity, which allows interaction in many aspects with the Mustang, is based on a new generation of the Sync system.
