Fracking Design: how to be a successful sustainable company

After a trip to the province of Neuquén and backed by more than 10 years of experience in the textile industry, Fracking Design was born, a triple impact brand that produces sustainable productsfrom the bags containing the sand that is used for the activity of the frackinga form of unconventional oil and gas extraction.

About Fracking Design

The Basilotta sisters’ interest in fashion arose in 2008 and, after a decade, they already had a strong traditional clothing brand which had 3 own stores, 5 franchises and more than 60 clients in Argentina.

However, in 2018 the entrepreneurs decided it was time to incorporate the concept of sustainability into the business.

In this process of brand growth, we were mothers and we began to feel that we had to (…) sow a seed from the sustainable and continue doing what we knew how to do, but in a different way.

From this previous experience, Carla, Ornella and Mora developed a harmonious work dynamic that today allows them to carry out a family business where each one can practice the profession they are passionate about.

Working as a family for us is natural. We are friends, partners, sisters and, in addition, each one plays a role in the enterprise. I am in the design part, Mori has a degree in communication and is in charge of the brand image, and Car is a political scientist and is in the corporate and institutional area. We complement each other very well.

Currently, the Fracking Design value chain starts in Neuquén, a province located in the Argentine Patagonia. From there they get the big bagsthe waste that businesswomen use as raw material to make bags, pots, wallets and more.

But what are the big bags? As we mentioned at the beginning, it is about the sand container bags which is used for oil extraction.

Sand is the main component for fracking, and a well uses approximately 26,500 bags that end up in a treatment plant, burned, affecting air quality.

The consolidation of a sustainable company

Carla Basilotta explains that Fracking Design’s main purpose is to mitigate the carbon footprint. Likewise, she comments that this enterprise seeks promote local work and industry.

Our entire value chain is crossed by cooperatives and production units in Neuquén and Buenos Aires. In addition, with our entire team, we train cooperatives to be able to handle this material and achieve the product we are looking for.

Another characteristic that makes Fracking Design a sustainable company is the economic impact and, in this sense, Carla points out that it is a profitable project, where everyone in the team lives from it and, without that impact, it could not be sustainable over time.

For his part, Mora Basilotta adds that for all this to be possible, the company’s value proposition is based on three pillars: they are timeless, unique and genderless products.

They are timeless products as we believe that the collections are the programmed obsolescence of fashion (…) In addition, they are unique products as we respect the original prints of the big bags. (…) And they are products without gender, since when we design them we focus on functionality.

Finally, Mora points out that at Fracking Design they seek to detach themselves from the concept that recycled products are rustic by nature and, together with the National Institute of Industrial Technology (INTI), work to offer pieces premium in terms of design and quality.
