Group products in WooCommerce – .com

One of the things that my clients who use WooCommerce ask me for the most is the possibility of grouping, combining or joining several products in one. The truth is that WooCommerce allows you to do that in several ways, depending on what exactly you need. As there are several possibilities, it is sometimes easy to get caught up in the options.

My objective in this post is to summarize the three main options that exist, to see the differences and to know which option interests us the most. Namely, the current possibilities are:

1. Product packs

This option is the typical “batch” of products. A combo in which the user buys a set of products defined by us, at a lower price than it would cost to buy them separately. Let’s imagine we sell drinks. We can create a “pack” product that is a batch in which we offer three glasses at a lower price than the three separately:

As we can see, this plugin shows us in a very intuitive way that the pack includes the three drinks, and the discount is clear, since the theoretical price is crossed out and the price with the discount next to it.

The packs or lots are perfect to encourage purchases, to sell products that do not sell so well, and to make specific promotions that you can announce to the homepage.

We can do these batches thanks to the plugin. This WooCommerce extension also allows us to indicate the discount for each product individually, indicate the quantity, show (or not) the image, and change the product name or description.

2. Linked Products

Another option we have is to create linked products. The concept is similar, but instead of offering a batch of products with a global discount, what we do is offer a single product with several “gift” products.

Let’s imagine that we sell a laptop. To encourage its sale we can give away a matching cover and protector. We can link these two “gifts” directly to the “base” product with the plugin. Once configured, the result is this:

As we can see, the concept is similar to the previous one, but in this case there is a main product and the others are gifts. Depending on the marketing strategy we will use one or the other.

3. Compound Products in WooCommerce

Finally, we have one last concept, called composite products. In this case we are not making a batch nor are we buying a product when buying another, but what we are offering is a “multiple” or compound purchase on the same page.

This is especially useful when you have a “base” product and several “extra” products. An example that will be familiar to us is that of a car dealership. Once you have chosen the car and the model, they tempt you with the extras: climate control instead of air conditioning, aluminum wheels instead of hubcaps, leather interiors, bluetooth, integrated iPad, “good” spare wheel, and all the extra pijadas that you can think of.

Well, this is the same, thanks to the . Let’s see an example with a reflex camera in which the customer is “tempted” with extra lenses, memory cards, and even covers:

As we can see, the client can optionally choose all the extras, and the price is calculated automatically. Once we have everything chosen, you can add it to the cart as a normal product, and we already have it a little closer to shopping!

4. Force Products in WooCommerce

What this option does is that when you buy a product, another is automatically added to the cart.

For example, let’s imagine that we have an iPhone repair service, and one of the repairs is “glass repair”, which is €50 of labor. Well, we can make it so that if someone buys it from us, the product “iPhone glass” is automatically added, because obviously, if we want to repair it, we will also need the replacement:

This automatically added product may or may not be required. In the case of the image we can see how it is mandatory, since it cannot be removed from the cart. But we could also choose not to make it mandatory, so that the user can remove it. This is achieved with the plugin.

Normally, this type of pack is used to include necessary products within a service. For example, if you rent a venue for parties, and you want the cleaning and collection service to be mandatory. Or if you sell a trip and insurance is required. Finally, imagination to power!

5. Mix of products in WooCommerce

Another very interesting possibility is to give the user the option of choosing a certain number of products from a selection that you offer.

Let’s imagine that you have 10 products, and you want to offer a “pack” of 3 products that the user “assembles” himself. Well, that is what we can achieve with the plugin:

In principle, this pack has a closed price (that’s the point of the plugin), but if you want you can make the price the sum of all the elements that make it up. Also at the level of shipping costs it can be the sum of all, or a single amount.

Summary

Ok, let’s go over the three systems for grouping products in WooCommerce:

  1. : Offer a batch of several products at a global price lower than the sum of the individual ones.
  2. : Gift one or more products with the purchase of another.
  3. : Offer optional “extra” products, related to a main product.
  4. : You force to buy a product when they buy another.
  5. : The user can select a certain number of products from a selection that you offer at a fixed price.

As we can see, the three plugins allow us to group products, and the use of one or the other will depend on our marketing strategy or tactic. They all have built-in stock control, so that when selling a grouped product, the products that make it up are subtracted from their respective stocks, meaning that at the functionality level all three are extremely useful.
