High Tatras, in Slovakia, is Europe’s number one destination for this summer. Here, travelers can enjoy a mythical landscape of mountains and waterfalls, where brown bears, now eradicated from most of Europe, thrive in this wild and rugged region. Away from wildlife spotting, travelers can also enjoy hiking to the top of Slovakia’s highest peak, Gerlach (Gerlachovský štít), sailing on the Štrbské Pleso glacier, and the traditional hospitality of high-altitude mountain huts.

At the northernmost point of the UK, the Shetland Islands have also earned a place on this year’s Europe favorites list, coming in at number six. Adrift in the North Sea, Shetland is a destination for the more adventurous. Those who make the journey to this enchanting archipelago, which can be reached by plane, or by overnight ferry from Aberdeen, will be rewarded with stunning coastal walks, island wildlife viewing and fabulous fish and chips.

This list also includes the capital of Spain. Madrid is consecrated as one of the cities that is taking a step forward with a renewed vigor, and also has one of the coolest night streets on the continent, Calle de Ponzano, with tapas bars and minimalist cocktails. Winding its way between 21 villages and four islands along Iceland’s elementary north coast, the newly founded Iceland Arctic Coast Trail offers the best of Iceland except the crowds.

Lyon, France

The port city of Bari in Italy is enjoying a renaissance that has been more than a decade in the making; and Lyon, France, will become France’s new favorite destination for international visitors. The rest of the destinations that close this Lonely Planet top 10 are: Hercegovina (the southern half of Bosnia and Herzegovina), Liechtenstein (located in Central Europe, in the Rhine Valley in the Alps), Vevey (Switzerland), and Istria (Croatia).
