Parent articles and child articles

throughout the length and breadth of marketplace From Jeff Bezos we see a number of products that have variations within the same listing, and even have different prices for each of these products. You enter an article and see that you can choose between a white or black table just by clicking on a box. In this example you can see how the seller has added color and size variants to the same product.

The objective of grouping all of them in one has its origin both in the comfort of the customer when searching, finding and buying the product he wants, as well as for the seller in terms of organization. Therefore, it is important to start by talking about the differentiation between parent articles and child articleswhich are the basis for making product variants.

The parent article it is something like the “umbrella” under which all the modifications of a product are collected. In Spanish we can refer to it as “parent article”. This article parent it is not attached to any ASIN, since it is not an article itself, but the “cover” of it, which will appear on the Amazon results pages. For its part, the child item is each variation of the product. That is, the child product by which some products are differentiated from others. Therefore, each product variation will be a child article, with your product ID and your SKU. You can see it in the following image. The first one that appears is the parent article, the remaining 4 correspond to the child articles (color variation)

Yes, at first it may seem like a mess, but it is simpler than it seems. Many sellers opt for the option of add them through the inventory file, which to be honest if you have never used it, is a real ordeal! Thanks to this way of adding products, you won’t have to fight with any excel sheet anymore (or at least for now).

Step 1: How to create a parent article

Many professional sellers choose to add their products by files, but the truth is that there is a simpler and more intuitive way to upload your items and their variants. In any case, you can include all of them by downloading a file from the ‘Inventory’ tab and clicking on ‘Add product’. All the rules for filling out the document are on one of the pages of the document. If you do not have much experience, it is better that you opt for the options that we tell you, since it is much simpler. We can use the option to add variants in case you are faced with one of these options, or if you want to add your product directly with its variations:

  • A well-positioned product, to which you want to add a variant
  • Two independent products that you want to join under a parent item

The first thing we need to do is go to the ‘Inventory‘ and click ‘Add a product’.

If your product is already on Amazon, you will have to search for its identifier in the search engine that appears in this section. If it is not in the Amazon catalog, you must click on ‘Create a new listing‘.

Next, a new screen will appear, where you must select the category to which your product belongs, within the drop-down that Amazon presents. Try to make this as exact and specific as possible, since it depends on your product positioning correctly. Once we have established the last category, a ‘Select’ button will appear.

In this case it will open a new screen to create the product. As you will see, there are a series of fields that appear as mandatory, but you should not fill them all in when creating a parent product. In the essential information section, fill in the following:

  • Name or title of the article: if you already have an article created and you just want to add a ‘parent’ to it, you can copy the product title avoiding giving information about the variants. That is, it must be a generic title that includes the keywords for which we want to position.
  • Brand: we must indicate the brand of the product
  • Maker

Although below you see that the Product identifier as a required field, you should not fill it in. Once you have completed these fields, go to the section ‘variants’. In this section you will see that a dropdown appears in which you will find the different variables that a product can have. Select the one that best suits your item (size, color, size and color, shape…). Once you have established this theme, you can add the specifications. That is, if you are selling a t-shirt model that has different sizes, you must indicate the subject “size/size” and in the box that appears below indicate the size ratio of your product (as cataloged physically). then click on ‘Add variants’. You will see that everything you have been entering will appear below, in addition to indicating that you specify the product identifier, the state, the price… There will be two ways to proceed in case we already have the child product on Amazon.

Step 2: Add the variants

This is where we usually have problems when we want to add the variants of our already created products. Normally we go directly to our inventory management, and in modifying we go to the ‘Add variants’ section. However, this must be done from a parent article, as we have discussed in the previous step, and then add our products. And what happens if I already have the product for sale? Or if I have no product? Keep reading!

Option A: Introduce a variant that does not exist on Amazon

But what if my product is not on Amazon yet or I want to introduce the product with variations from scratch? Well, if you are the official manufacturer or distributor of the product, no problem! You just have to enter the product identifier of each variant (the ASIN or EAN, for example) in the corresponding section, leaving the SKU blank. Also add the rest of the information: the price, the status of the product, the number of stock units… It is the easiest way to add products.

Option B: Introduce a variation of a product that already exists on Amazon

It is possible that, once you have uploaded several products, you have realized that you can incorporate them into the same listing so that they appear together under the same product. In this case, you must follow the same steps as in the previous option, creating a parent product. When you have entered the variations of the product, you must enter the same data as in the previous case. Keep in mind that the identifier has to be exactly the one you have in your Amazon Seller section of Inventory for it to be synchronized. That is, add both the ASIN and the SKU. Thus, Amazon will identify it and add it as a variant, indicating its relationship with the one you were already selling in green. Keep in mind that if you put the ASIN of the product but not the same SKU, it will create a new product that competes with the one that is already being sold.

Step 3: Add photos and create the listing

Finally, after creating or adding the variants to the parent article, you will only have to click on ‘Save and finish‘ for the changes to be saved. Later, you will have to add one or more photos (remember the specifications that Amazon establishes for photos) in the Images section. We have skipped the offer section, which will appear as a mandatory field at the beginning, because the parent article is actually used to house the rest of the products, but it has no real validity. Once you have added your images (from the parent article, not from the variants). We click on ‘save and finish’ again and ready! Our listing of a parent product with one or more child products will have already been created. To ensure that it has been created successfully, we must go back to the ‘Inventory management’ section. Have you noticed that your parent item has an ASIN even though we haven’t added one to it? Well, don’t be alarmed. It is an invalid ASIN that serves only to identify the product, but obviously does not have stock.

Modify product variations or parent item

It is possible that once you have done all these steps, your variations appear without a photo or as an inactive or suppressed listing. It is time to add all the extra data and photographs of each of the products. To modify these data you will only have to go to the ‘Inventory’ Already ‘Inventory management’. There you will see that your parent article appears with an arrow. Click on the arrow, and in the variant you want, click on the ‘Modify’ button. You can now add or edit the data you consider necessary, such as the descriptions, the “bullets” and the images of each of the products.
