How to segment Facebook updates on your Fan Page – .com

Some time ago Facebook activated the possibility of segmenting your status updates for your Fan Page. You will wonder what that is. Well, basically it refers to choosing who you want to show your status updates to, within your followers.

That makes a lot of sense, because if, for example, you sell shoes online and you’re going to launch an offer on women’s shoes, it makes more sense for this update to be seen only by women. Why bother the rest with “advertising” that neither comes nor goes? Much better to only say it to the public that interests you, since otherwise the rest will ignore your messages (bad for you), or stop following you (bad in general).

We control this possibility of segmentation thanks to the “target” icon that appears below our status update, you can see it here:

By clicking here, we can choose up to seven variables (sex, educational level, interests, sentimental status, age, location and language), so that we will only show that information to the public that interests them, turning that “advertising” into “useful information”. :

However, on some pages that target does not appear, and all they see is this:

It is said out there that the target only appears on certain pages, or depending on the number of followers you have, but it is not so. In reality everything is much simpler. It is a configuration issue. For it to appear you have to go to “Settings” of the page, and activate the box in “Segmentation and privacy of publications”:

Simple, easy and fast. With this you can now segment your status updates so that they are only shown to the right people.

Once again, I remember the importance of showing only valuable information to each segment of your audience. For example, if you have a Spanish and English audience and you make status updates in both languages, it doesn’t make sense to show both updates to both audiences, because each set will only interact with their language and ignore the other. And once again, that’s going to hurt your , apart from being a bad user experience of course.

Finally, there it is. If you have any more questions about how segmentation or Edgerank works, you can contact me through the form on the right or through the comments. See you!
