Minecraft gardener or avatar trainer: two jobs with a future in Spain, according to the Government

Last week the Government, led by President Pedro Sánchez, presented a compendium of measures and a “vision of the country” -according to Sánchez- that tries to elucidate what the development of the Spanish economy and society could be within three decades.

The plan included some innovative measures, aimed at promoting the digital economy and technological jobs, within the framework of the eternal debate on the effects on employment of automation and industrial conversion. It also had some measures that received special attention, such as the proposal to reduce the working day to 35 hours a week, something that no country that has proposed it to date has achieved it de facto.

But beyond that, in the more than 600 pages of the report carried out by more than a hundred experts chosen by the Government, an in-depth evaluation of how Spain can solve problems such as structural unemployment by finding new employment niches in the digital sector and the new collaborative economy or the fight against climate change.

What is perhaps most striking is that professions such as Minecraft gardener, avatar trainer or esports player are explicitly named as one of the professions that may be common in 2050.

Minecraft gardener or avatar trainer: jobs of the future?

The one from the Spain 2050 report specifically says the following:

This dynamic has been reproduced for centuries and nothing makes us think that it will not continue to do so in the future: new technologies will also create jobs, many of them associated with the development, management and repair of these same technologies (programmers, mechanics, operators of remote robots, data scientists) and the growth of the metaverse and virtual reality. Thus, jobs such as a Minecraft gardener, avatar trainer, or professional e-sports player will be more and more frequent.

Finally, an esports player is a profession that is already in force and that has prospered within the framework of entertainment that has led to the rise of platforms such as Twitch, with video games and brands investing large amounts of money.

What is certain is the weight of the video game sector

Although works like these may attract attention, and it remains to be seen for yourself if Minecraft continues to be a popular game in three decades, what is certain is the growth of the video game sector in Spain and Europe.

The sector had a turnover of 1,747 million euros last year, 18 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the Spanish Association of Video Games (AEVI).
